GAGASAN 1Malaysia tidak mungkin terlaksana tanpa penubuhan sekolah satu aliran. Bagaimana mungkin ia terjadi jika 12 tahun kanak-kanak berada di satu tempat iaitu: 1 tahun di peringkat prasekolah, 6 tahun sekolah rendah dan kemudian 5 tahun di sekolah menengah.

Bayangkanlah betapa akrabnya hubungan antara kaum jika sejak berumur 6 tahun mereka dapat bergaul mesra sehingga tingkatan 5 ketika mereka berumur 18 tahun.

Inilah ramuan atau formula paling mujarab untuk membentuk bangsa Malaysia tanpa mengira kaum dan agama.

Pemimpin-pemimpin politik yang mewakili tiga kaum terbesar di negara ini iaitu Melayu, Cina dan India mestilah jujur dan komited mahu benar-benar melahirkan bangsa Malaysia yang bersatu padu.

Janganlah hanya mementingkan kaum masing-masing tanpa mengutamakan kepentingan negara. Kita amat kecewa apabila anak-anak pergi ke sekolah yang berbeza, ibu bapa dan guru juga terpisah mengikut kaum kerana memilih sekolah yang berbeza atas kepentingan kaum masing-masing.

Sebenarnya model Sekolah Wawasan yang pernah dicadangkan oleh mantan Perdana Menteri, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad adalah model sekolah satu aliran yang paling praktikal.

Sebenarnya orang Cina dan India pun amat berminat dengan sekolah satu aliran ini tetapi para pendidik di kalangan kaum-kaum tersebut yang mempunyai sentimen perkauman yang amat menebal yang menentang idea yang baik ini.

Lihat sahaja Sekolah Victoria Institution (sekolah VI) yang merupakan contoh terbaik Sekolah Satu Aliran di negara ini.

Lihat sahaja semua ibu bapa dari kaum Melayu, Cina dan India berlumba-lumba mahu menghantar anak-anak mereka belajar di sekolah itu.

Lihat sahaja bagaimana mesranya pelajar-pelajar dari ketiga-tiga kaum bergaul mesra dan bersaing secara sihat dalam pelajaran.

Guru-guru, staf juga mempunyai komposisi ketiga-tiga kaum ini. Begitu juga dengan Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru juga diwakili oleh ketiga-tiga kaum.

Lihat sahaja betapa seronoknya pelajar bergaul mesra semasa bersukan dan apa juga kokurikulum yang lain.

Sekolah VI ini juga cemerlang dalam akademik. Mengapa semua ibu bapa dari kaum Melayu, Cina dan India amat berminat dengan sekolah VI ini sedangkan ia adalah model sekolah satu aliran?

Kerajaan terutamanya Menteri Pelajaran wajar mengkaji model sekolah VI ini dan menjadikannya sebagai asas atau model untuk membentuk sekolah satu aliran di negara ini.

Setakat ini sekolah VI amat popular dan menjadi rebutan pelajar serta ibu bapa daripada semua kaum.

Mengapa sekolah VI sebagai sekolah satu aliran begitu berjaya dan dan mendapat sokongan semua kaum ?

Saya bersetuju dengan pendapat dari pembaca di atas. Mengapa kita harus menidakkan para pelajar kita untuk bergaul dengan pelbagai kaum? Saya juga berpendapat, sistem sekolah satu aliran perlu diterapkan kepada lapisan sekolah rendah dahulu. Ini penting kerana di usia begitulah mereka akan lebih mudah merasa selesa dengan kawan-kawan dari pelbagai warna kulit. Contoh sekolah rendah kebangsaan yang bermutu tinggi sewaktu ketika dahulu adalah Sekolah Rendah Sultan Hishamuddin berdekatan dengan Bank Negara dan juga Sekolah Rendah St. John di Bukit Nanas.

Untuk membentuk Orang Malaysia yang cintakan negara dan rakyatnya, mereka perlulah bergaul antara satu sama lain dahulu, lebih lebih lagi dari kecil lagi.

Kita mendengar banyak keluhan dan kritikan serta cemuhan dari mereka yang menentang sekolah satu aliran di mana mutu pendidikan yang tidak bagus menyebabkan perlu wujudnya sekolah vernakular.

Ini mudah diatasi dengan membuat kajian menyeluruh terhadap sistem pelajaran kita sebagaimana yang telah dibuat lebih 50 tahun dahulu. Laporan dari penyelidik bebas mampu membuahkan cadangan-cadangan bernas yang boleh menyelesaikan masalah yang dihadapi di dalam sekolah kebangsaan rendah dan menengah.

Jika mereka mengatakan bahawa mereka perlu mengekalkan budaya kaum masing-masing, hujah ini tidak masuk akal kerana kaum-kaum mereka di negara-negara lain tidak sedikit pun belajar di sekolah-sekolah vernakular malah, ada sekolah-sekolah vernakular di negara tersebut dilarang penubuhannya. Yang ada, cuma sekolah kebangsaan di negara masing-masing. Rakyat mereka belajar mengenai satu sama lain dengan lebih dekat dengan cara begini.

Ada yang menjadi negara maju kelas pertama tanpa wujudnya sekolah vernakular di negara tersebut. Oleh itu, apa sebabnya mahu diteruskan juga sekolah vernakular di negara Malaysia ini?

Mungkin juga negara ini tidak jadi maju kerana wujudnya sekolah vernakular? Manakan tidak? Apabila para pelajar tidak dapat duduk semeja dan mengenali satu sama lain, mana mungkin mereka dapat mentadbir negara ini dengan baik apabila mereka memerintah negara ini apabila dewasa kelak? Adakah kita akan menjadi maju jika ditunggangi oleh permasalahan sebegini?

Ini akan menjadi lebih kronik di dalam masa 10 tahun akan datang apabila para pelajar sekarang menjadi pemimpin muda di dalam parti politik masing-masing.

Mereka yang ingin menegakkan sekolah vernakular hanyalah mereka yang muflis idea dan masih berfikiran di tampuk lama. Ironisnya, kebanyakkan mereka yang menyokong sekolah vernakular, tidak pernah pula belajar di sekolah tersebut. Ini terjadi kerana mereka ini penyokong tegar puak pembangkang.

Hanya kerana membenci kerajaan, mereka menentang semangat harmoni yang akan terbit dari sekolah satu aliran. Orang jenis apakah ini? Ya, orang yang tiada sifat malu dan tiada pendapat bernas untuk melahirkan Orang Malaysia yang bersatu padu dan harmonis.

Mereka hanya mahu mencipta api kebencian supaya rakan-rakan mereka dapat memegang kuasa. Barulah puas hati mereka.

Yang menjadi mangsa adalah – impian untuk melihat rakyat yang mendokong ke arah Rukunegara dan Perlembagaan Malaysia.

Adalah penting agar kajian terperinci dilakukan untuk meningkatkan mutu pembelajaran di dalam sekolah kebangsaan. Ini perlu dilakukan segera.

Akta Pendidikan 1996 juga perlu digubal secepat mungkin. Jika Menteri Dalam Negeri, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein mampu menggubal semula akta yang penting seperti Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri, nescaya Timbalan Perdana Menteri yang juga Menteri Pelajaran Malaysia terlebih mampu untuk mengembleng tenaga menggubal Akta Pendidikan kita yang berkecamuk itu.

Jika Menteri Pelajaran malas untuk pening kepala mendokong aspirasi Orang Malaysia untuk melihat anak-anak mudanya bersekolah di dalam sistem satu aliran, maka serahkanlah jawatan tersebut kepada orang lain yang lebih kuat jatidirinya.

Masa untuk duduk bersimpuh, tertunduk malu seperti anak dara di dalam Kabinet sudah berakhir. Inilah masa untuk tunjukkan sifat kepimpinan yang sebenar! Terima kasih.

    VI is just like any other secondary school in Malaysia.

No value added at all simply because they do not have anything substantial and intelligent to say.   3. Murid-murid yang dari sek. vernakular memang ada yang mendatangkan masaalah apabila mereka terpaksa melanjutkan pelajaran ke SMK apabila tidak mampu utk ke SMJK(C). Mana kan logic ada di antara mereka yang tidak boleh menggunakan Bahasa Kebangsaan walaupun setelah 5 thn berada di SMK? Takkan lah semasa 6 thn di SRJK(C) mereka ini tidak belajar langsung B. Kebangsaan?

    Mereka bukan tidak boleh tapi sengaja tidak mahu. Bak kata pepatah…”You can bring a horse to water but you cannot make it drink”…..I tell you…these lot are real stubborn horses!!

    Ada yang sgt sombong dan perasan bangsa dia superior dari yang lain. Ada yang enggan duduk bersebelahan murid Melayu, lebih lagi dgn murid India…walhal mereka sama taraf pencapaian akademik…..sama-sama lemah!

    Amat menyakitkan hati apabila guru bertanya dlm B. Keb. dan dijawab dgn B. Cina @ Tamil. Apa ni? Kata rakyat Malaysia. Bahasa Kebangsaan pun tak boleh nak guna?

    Yes thats right. In fact a few months back, I wrote something similar at DemiNegara on how the VI produced colour blind, super achiever Malaysians. Wonder if Utusan read my comments there.

    To be fair though, the VI isn’t as good as back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. I should know, I graduated from the VI in 2006. My dad too is an alma matter.

    DURING MY TIME, I noticed that the Malays excelled in sports, the Chinese in academics and the Indians….well they’re a mix bunch. There are exceptions of course, but thats how it generally goes. The rot really began when VI crafted up “Project Bola” where they would import Malay students throughout the country who excelled in football but were mediocre academically.

    After form3 I got dumped into the only arts stream class in school so I was stucked with these bunch of rascals. Well what can I say about them? Most of my memories are of us smoking cigarettes behind the classroom, ponteng class/school together (teamwork is required here) but mostly me helping them out with their English…..good years though overall.

    In my opinion they should have never changed the medium of instruction to BM, at least for VI. But that’s a whole other issue.

  5. Saya tergerak untuk komen disini memandangkan ramai yang beranggapan sekolah 1aliran adalah jalan penyelesaiaan kepada masalah sosial negara. Saya tidak merasakan sekolah 1aliran adalah penyelesaiaan yang mutlak.

    Beberapa tahun yang lepas, TV3 didalam segmen buletin utama memaparkan bagaimana di IPTA tempatan khususnya (malah di sekolah2 kebangsaan di Malaysia secara amnya) sifat berkelompok masih menebal di kalangan rakyat Malaysia. Tidak semestinya dengan bersekolah di bawah 1 bumbung dapat mengeratkan keakraban di kalangan rakyat Malaysia.

    Perubahan hanya mungkin dapat dikecapi menerusi anjakan paradigma dikalangan rakyat jelata Malaysia. Fikirkanlah, apa ertinya sekolah 1aliran andai apabila anda pulang ke rumah, kembali ke kelompok komuniti anda, anda masih mempunyai persepsi negatif jiran tetangga anda yang berbilang kaum.

    Umpamanya, saya menetap di kawasan rumah pangsa kos rendah di KL. Adalah mengecawakan apabila kebanyakan penghuni berbangsa India dan Cina berasa kecewa atas layanan yang mereka terima. Ada ketika mereka berasa tersisih. Semuanya bermula dari tunjuk perasaan Hindraf. Walaupun sebahagian dari mereka amat tidak bersetuju atas tuntutan Hindraf.

    Apa ertinya apabila kita mempelajari dari subjek pengajian am semasa tingkatan 6 bahawa hanya terdapat satu bangsa di Malaysia, yakni Malaysia tetapi apabila mengisi borang bagi menduduki peperiksaan terpaksa memilih antara Cina, Melayu, India dan Lain-lain.

    Adakah benar 1Malaysia mampu direalisasi andai pemikiran rakyat masih dibelenggu sikap rasisme yang melampau. Baru-baru ini berlaku insiden di Shah Alam dimana para protes memijak kepala lembu. Walaupun para pemimpin dari setiap parti mengkritik tindakan mereka terdapat segelintir pihak terus-terusan menghina dan mengkritik kaum yang lain. Ini bukan atas dasar agama, This is pure racism.

    Manusia yang tidak dibekali rasionalisme tidak mungkin dapat berfikir secara waras malah akan terus menerus berpegang kepada pendirian mereka. Ini lumrah insaniah. Quran menyebut, ada manusia yang bermata tetapi tidak melihat, bertelinga tetapi tidak mendengar. Ini adalah hakikat kedegilan manusia.

    Malah manusia akan terus menerus menerap sikap negatif ke kelompok sekeliling. Apakah ertinya andai remaja masa hadapan diterap nilai integriti yang positif andai kelompok sekelilingnya akan meracuni mereka.

    P/S : VI sekolah yang bagus. Perpaduan di sekolah ini mengagumkan. Saya percaya pengimplementasian sekolah 1aliran pasti dapat dilihat dengan amat berkesan disekolah ini. Persoalannya, mampukah pengimplementasian sekolah 1aliran dapat dilaksanakan secara mega diseluruh Malaysia.

    JMD : Jika di IPTA ada pelajar bersifat berkelompok dan tidak mahu berinteraksi, maka dari sekolah rendah lagilah mereka harus bergaul di dalam sistem satu sekolah satu aliran. Apa guna kita komplen mengenai suasana di IPTA jika kita tidak mahu meyatukan pelajar kita di sekolah rendah, bercakap di dalam satu bahasa kebangsaan dan mengenali satu sama lain dengan lebih dekat sejak kecil lagi?

      Ya, pelajar IPTA tidak bercampur gaul, begitu juga dengan pelajar sekolah menengah.Puncanya adalah SJK. Kanak-kanak yang tidak mengenali kaum lain akan gagal bercampur gaul kerana tidak mempunyai persamaan yang jelas. Jadi kita memerlukan sekolah satu aliran.

      Perubahan melalui anjakan paradigma?Ya, sekolah satu aliran adalah anjakan paradigma yang kita perlukan.

      Isu mengisi borang ini tidak berkenaan dan tidak menyumbang apa-apa. Lebih baik menyuruh semua parti politik di Malaysia dibubarkan kerana mereka juga bersifat perkauman.

      1Malaysia dalam suasana perkauman yang tebal?Ya, sangat tebal maka sekolah satu aliran diperlukan untuk menjayakan 1Malaysia.

      Manusia akan terus menerap sikap negatif terhadap kelompok lain.Memang benar, jadi sekolah satu aliran diperlukan untuk mengurangkan kesan ini.

      Tentang IPTA, saya memang tahu apa yang berlaku.Dalam kuliah pelajar-pelajar akan duduk dikalangan kaum masing-masing. Begitu juga dengan saya. Pensyarah yang mengajar kami berulang-ulang kali menegur dan meminta kami supaya bercampur gaul. Tetapi nasihat beliau sudah 12 tahun terlambat, kami tak akan bercampur.Kami tidak saling mengenali antara satu sama lain. Lagipun siapa yang selesa bercampur dengan mereka-mereka yang asyik berbual dalam bahasa yang kita tidak fahami?Masing-masing tidak tahu untuk memulakan perbualan?Tiada apa sangat untuk dikongsi?Bayangkan apa yang akan terjadi 20 tahun akan datang?

      • Saya geram bila bercampur dengan kaum lain dan mereka berbahasa dalam bahasa yang saya tidak faham. Ini sudah menunjukkan mereka tidak ada perasaan untuk jaga hati atau lebih tepat sekali, kurang sopan. Mansuhkan SJK ini dari peringkat awal. Adakan mata pelajaran elektif untuk Mandarin/Tamil/Perancis/Jerman etc. Tidak kira melayu,iban,kadazan,baju,dan lain lain, sesiapa juga boleh mengambil bahasa lain sebagai extra kurikulum mereka.

        Apa masalahnya?

      Berdasarkan pendapat anda, bagaimana caranya kita boleh mengubah keadaan ini? Apakah mungkin, jika anak-anak kita dibentuk daripada awal supaya tidak membeza ras perkauman dan etnik, keadaan ini mungkin akan berubah di masa hadapan?

      • Saya percaya kelompok yang pertama harus diubah adalah menerusi penerapan nilai-nilai perpaduan didalam kelompok keluarga. Yakni, kerajaan harus menerap nilai perpaduan dirumah sebelum disekolah.

        Memang nampak seperti mustahil tetapi hakikatnya tidak. Kita harus ingat didalam zaman kegawatan US – 1930, FDR memilih pendekatan mengunakan radio untuk menyampaikan maklumat kepada orang awam. Masalah mula timbul apabila masyarakat hari ini tidak mempunyai sumber maklumat yang pada pandangan mereka bernilai. Aliran media utama dilihat sebagai alat politik, akhirnya, media tidak dapat menjadi saluran maklumat yang sesuai.

        Kedua, projek pembangunan kerajaan mengalakkan kepada wujud rasisme didalam kelompok masyarakat itu sendiri. Umum sedar, kawasan perumahan kos rendah telah berubah menjadi pusat jenayah. Ini adalah kerana jurang kekayaan di kawasan ini. Cuba bayangkan sebuah kawasan perumahan rumah pangsa kos rendah yang didiami oleh rata-ratanya penghuni berbangsa melayu bersebelahan kawasan rumah teres yang didiami rata-ratanya kaum cina.

        Kawasan perumahan di Malaysia sudah berubah umpama ghetto kaum. Kawasan didefinasi menerusi kelompok yang menginap. Di KL ada yang melihat kawasan bukit bintang ‘area kaum cina’…Mengapa???

        Saya percaya perubahan dapat dikecapi dalam negara andai kerajaan merubah pemikiran dari unit yang terkecil bermula dari institusi kekeluargaan dan seterusnya masyarakat.

  6. VI, St John, CBN, BBGS antara sekolah sekolah yang patut dicontohi sebagai sekolah satu aliran. Banyak lagi sekolah lain tetapi sekolah-sekolah ini adalah antara yang paling popular kerana location ia di Kuala Lumpur. But no doubt, these school produce many exceptional students with very different mindset. In general, the Malays are not like typical malays, the chinese are not like typical chinese and the Indian are not typical Indians. These is through my observation.

  7. it is really difficult for me to engage in constructive debate on this kind of thing with my friends. till now i don’t think that they understand what single stream school means actually. to their credit they really know how to dodge a straight question from me.. hmm he must be a closet politician.

    Buat apa kita beria-ia nak mereka bersatu dengan kita kalau mereka taknak?

    Hidung tak mancung pipi tersorong-sorong.

    Yang penting kat sekolah kebangsaan kita, kita wajibkan pengajaran bahasa ketiga (Mandarin/India). Sekolah anak saya dah jadi perintis untuk pembelajaran bahasa ketiga ini tapi hanya sebagai subjek pilihan/tambahan. Saya harap ia jadi subjek wajib dan diperluaskan ke seluruh sekolah kebangsaan seluruh negara.

    Saya ada letak komen dalam BigDog mengenai isu SSS ini.

    Saya tak dapat nak menyokong SSS ini kerana saya tak mahu mereka menuntut pula supaya kita bubarkan MRSM, MCKK atau yang sejenis dengannya. Saya tak rasa majoriti bangsa melayu sanggup.

    JMD : SSS mencadangkan agar sekolah sekolah vernakular yang menggunakan bahasa pengantar selain dari bahasa kebangsaan diserapkan menjadi sekolah kebangsaan di mana bahasa pengantarnya adalah bahasa Malaysia. Bahasa-bahasa lain pula diajar sebagai mata pelajaran elektif (atau wajib – pilih mana satu). Ini membolehkan kita mewujudkan rakyat Malaysia yang boleh berinteraksi dengan senang antara satu sama lain. Dalam pada masa yang sama, Bahasa Kebangsaan didaulatkan.     True, if you think about it. The only way this country is going to be united regardless is to remove any formal identification with race since young. This could only be done from the introduction of a single school system, without the need for government-supported vernacular or religious schools.

    It is high time people speak up against the racialists that challenge the need of a single school. They always come up with the stale arguments that ‘our parents’ generation was united and mixed around well regardless of vernacular schools’ while ignoring the fact that the so-called united generation, like it or not, went to the SAME school, not different ones.

    And it is nice that you brought up Victoria Institution. I think that the best schools that could actually unite the different races are old, prestigious schools in Malaysia (such as my old school, English College Johor Bahru, and others such as KGV Seremban, and King Edward VII Perak).

    They will never understand the kind of values and character a school like VI imbues on all those who pass through its portals unlesss they have experienced it for themselves.

    You and I can disagree on many issues, but we can always discuss them in a civil manner and there will always be mutual respect. We also accept one naothers’ differences, not tolerate!

    The road to a civilized society begins with schools like VI and others.

    Let us now with thankfulness be grateful for our blessings!

    I agree with the writer of the article on this topic in the star today.

    I think the issue here is not race but the school. If the politicians will think of the nations first and not their political survivals, if they are daring and brave to do what is right for the nation like tun M then things will be different.

    I am sure you are aware that many of our polititians ( especially the who’s who) did not send their decendents to local national school.

    Apa salahnya diadakan sekolah venakular? Bukankah rakyat Malaysia berbilang kaum, kebudayaan dan agama (tetapi satu kerakyatan)? Malah, hakikat ini dilaung2kan dalam sejarah, dalam usaha mengalakkan pelancongan dsb. Atau adakah fakta ini setakat hiasan dalam ucapan?

    Kalau nak mencapai 1Malaysi, hapuskan politik perkauman dan sikap mempertuankan satu2 kaum! Ikan mereput dari kepalanya!

    This is where one education system comes from. When the children of all races study and play together since they are small, they will connect with each other in so many levels.

    For instance – Jebat, Eric and Balan are friends during school since they are 6 years old. They grow up together. They play together. They are exposed to the same type of eductaion together. 15 years down the road, they will start to be aware of their surroundings and will think things on a higher level.

    If they want to fight about a certain issues, they will probably establish a platform to fight their stand. They will create NGOs. They will create political parties. If they grow up together, studied and played together, the issues that are close to their hearts will not be about race.

    It will probably be about social ills, poverty, better governance so on and so forth. If we start to have same education system (whatever that may be), under one roof, we will see in 25 years time, racial politics will probably lose its popularity. In 50 years time, the kids that are born today will fight over a common cause which are no longer about race.

    Do you get this big picture I am presenting to you? Isn’t this less drastic and even more beneficial to implement? Minus all the severe repercussions of simply to abolish racial based parties now?

      Soalan saya cuma satu.. berdasarkan komen anda, saya mendapat idea seolah-olah Barisan tidak mahu melepaskan identiti parti perkauman.. tetapi tidakkah anda terfikir, jika mereka betul-betul mahukan pengekalan parti politik secara perkauman, bukankah SSS atau Sekolah Satu Aliran ini bakal merugikan Barisan dalam jangka panjang?

      Kenapa harus Barisan memberi ruang untuk rakyat Malaysia berbincang, bercampur dan bersatu sejak kecil tanpa mengira ras bangsa dan etnik yang “merugikan” Barisan dalam jangka masa panjang (mengambil kira anda memberi anggapan bahawa Barisan masih mahu “pecah dan perintah” berasaskan parti2 politik berasaskan kaum)?

    although i am from SJI, i still look VI as one of the best school in Malaysia …

    I was just wondering whether the Malays are also prepared to open up their schools to non malays if the chinese and indians agree to adopt the single steam schooling system. There needs to be a quid pro quo in these kind of things. But if some Malays are already ready to brandish their keris and say such things like “kami akan menaungi **KK selagi ada bulan dan bintang…” I really dont think we can go far.

    I am a former St John’s boy and I truly believe that the single stream system is the way to go. Forget 1Malaysia if you allow all these SRJKC, SRJKT or MCKK to exist.

    JMD : Malays do not have specific school to themselves. Just one school – MCKK (against hundreds of SRJK types). The national schools which has BM as the medium of instruction is already opened for everyone. Malays do not have ‘schools’ per se. The sekolah agama are for Muslims (I do not think future ustazs and imams will get the best religious education in an environment where they have to study together with sexy girls in pinafores! 🙂 And MRSMs are for bumiputeras (with a few non bumis already studying in them as well). Quid pro quo you say? Tell that to the chauvinist SRJK type educationists.

  18. di zaman sekolah menengah dulu, saya lebih selesa bergaul dgn kaum india(selain dari orang melayu) dari orang cina. mungkin ini di sebabkan orang orang india lebih suka memasuki sekolah kebangsaan. bahasa malaysia mereka pun lancar dan cara mereka pun kita boleh terima. tetapi malangnya di waktu saya berada di tingkatan empat, saya hanya selesa berkawan dengan seorang kawan cina saya. bukan saya tidak boleh berkawan dengan orang cina yang lain, tetapi kurang mesra. kawan baik cina saya itu pun dahulunya bersekolah di sekolah kebangsaan yang sama dengan saya. kira nya kami menerima pelajaran yang sama dari sekolah.
    nak kata dia berubah jadi melayu, tak lah juga. sebab muka dia cina, cuma dia amat lancar berbahasa melayu dan inggeris. dia boleh juga bertutur bahasa kantonis.
    jadi saya rasa, lebih baik kita melaksanakan sekolah satu aliran sahaja, ataupun jika sekolah jenis kebangsaan pun, cuma sukatan pelajaran bahasa cina dan tamil sahaja di ajar dalam bahasa itu. pelajaran yang lain mestilah dalam bahasa malaysia atau inggeris.

    Sounds like you are implying is such a privilege for the national school to open to other races. Hellllooooo, kebangsaan school is not a privilege unless you are trying to tell us that SMK is originally a “Malay” school and you think you are doing us a favor for opening up the school.

    On one hand you are promoting SSS religiously and now you are sounding like one racist who is trying to close down all the vernacular schools. Don’t get me wrong, I am no fan of vernacular schools. It’s better for all the indians to study in kebangsaan school so that they could compete head on with the malays instead of being labelled by malay chauvinists as the losers and left-over on the street. The indians have everything to gain by going to SMK.

    But before trying to be so noble to help everyone to see your point about SSS and how their future can better, please open your MCKK to other races. Why do you need religious school and isolating some muslims from mixing with other races? Wouldn’t one day these religious school students will find it difficult to mix with other races? If they don’t have a problem, then I don’t see students in vernacular school have problems mixing with other races.

    Would MCKK students have difficulty mixing with other races?

    This question will help you to look at things in totality.

    Unless one rule apply to other races (vernacular school) and another rule apply to malays (MCKK, religious school).

      The way I read and understand the above sentence by JMD is that national schools are readily open (nothing privilege in nature) to all Malaysians to enroll.

      But some, do not wish their children to enroll in national schools. They prefer other type of schools having their own reasons for doing so. Some of these other type of schools may not have national agenda in their system to help build a strong, cohesive nation.

      And of course BM (which read “Bahasa Malaysia”) is the medium of instruction in national schools. This is Malaysia, so the medium shall be the national language. Same as in the Republic of China too, their national language is Mandarin, used by the chinese.

    Now, now, whoever says anyone is trying to close down vernacular schools? The SSS proposal says have BM as the medium of instruction for all schools. The vernacular schools must have BM as the medium of instruction and the curriculum exactly the same as the national schools. Nobody can be racist in promoting that because BM is the national language, written in the Constitution of the country.

    Good that you are no fan of vernacular schools, smkian. And good that you feel “it’s better for all the indians to study in kebangsaan school so that they could compete head on with the malays” and that “The indians have everything to gain by going to SMK”. However, I’m not sure whether their “labelling as the losers and left-over on the street” is done by chauvinist Malays. I nevertheless

    MCKK was opened since the British colonial time on the request of the then Sultan of Perak to the British colonial masters to help Malay boys in the field of education where the Malays were lagging far behind. This was at a time when no non-Malays were citizens in this country – they were stateless all the years under British colonial rule. So, one special consideration for the continuation of MCKK as a Malay institution is the fact that it was set up well before Merdeka.

    Merdeka came and the Special Position of the Malays was embodied in the Constitution, together with citizenship for non-Malays. While the institution of the Malay rulers is clearly spelt out under the Constitution, MCKK is not. But it should be regarded as falling under the Special Position of the Malays which is protected and promoted by the Rulers through the Government.

    Islamic schools are in furtherance of the the interests of the Islamic religion. It is justifiable because Islam is the official religion of the country.

    Not much is said about pupils of these schools facing problems in mixing or adjusting to society. Whereas a lot has been said about problems faced by pupils of the vernacular schools. The Deputy Minister of Education himself had stated in 2008 that a study conducted by the MCA with the assistance of the Education Ministry showed that about 25% of SRJKC pupils dropped out of school before reaching SPM.

    You asked, would MCKK students have difficulty mixing with other races? No. I am a product of MCKK and I know no MCKK boy or man who has. You see, MCKK is a secondary school. It’s the primary schools that are important in shaping childen’s minds and attitudes, that SSS refers to. They call it “the formative years”, the period when they form lasting impressions about their surroundings, the people they learn and play with. That will prepare them for the period after that and the future.

    Article 152 of the Constitution says Bahasa Malaysia is the National Language and all schools should have BM as the medium of instruction.

    Article 153 says the Malays have a Special Position in the country. Tun Dr Mahathir has said that there is no equality when the Malays have a Special Position and it is written in
    the Constitution. You cannot grudge that because, in exchange for that, non-Malays got citizenship; that was also written in the Constitution. We all must respect and live by the Constitution of the country.

    sekolah agama use bahasa malaysia, not arabic and started 13 years old.unlike SJKs, that’s why a lot of them failed to speaks proper standard BM, let alone malay dialect.mingling with each other at sekolah menengah?hohoho, no..they always huddled together at the corner,always in their own group… yes yes, some of them does mix, but not enough for national unity.

    Rasanya anda tak baca pun apa yang SSS cadangkan. Tak ada pun nak tutup, nak roboh sekolah yang sedia ada. Ianya dicadang diserap ke satu aliran. Guna bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa pengantar utama yang anda sebagai rakyat Malaysia mengaku sebagai bahasa Kebangsaan. Bahasa Mandarin, Tamil, Arab boleh sahaja diajar sebagai subjek elektif.

  25. VI I can imagine is an exceptional school. MCKK to is an exceptional school. Besides there are many other exceptional ones too. I had the experience being enrolled in a SRJK(I), and it later adopted a SRK name and today eventually SK only. In 6 years I have never known a Melayu headmaster and I have seen the dedication of this one headmaster. He put his heart and soul into teaching pupil good English. The teachers and staffs truly represent what Malaysia should be. Poor and rich alike enrolled their children in the school. Privileges was non existent. Today I hear the school is a very privileged one.

    We don’t have to have vernacular school. It is a matter of choice. Why the growth of hundreds if not thousands of verncular schools? In economic sense, there are demand for it. Ask ourselves why! We allow it and we want it. As children our fathers and mothers decide where we go to school. Not us. As parents we must ask ourselves in what kind of environment we want our children to do the growing up in. Those who have decided against a unified school system lay the blame on the quality of SK education. Inferior they say. Were Malaysia not inferior enough in the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s ? Then 4 PM developed it, didn’t they? Malaysia has not become superior yet but it has been developed and today we enjoy the benefit of the development that was planned and have taken place. The same goes for this unified school system. If we keep rejecting the idea, we are already defeated before we even begin to accept it. ACCEPTANCE is the mighty word. The SSS is not such a bad idea. We may not produce Einsteins, but it is step 1.

    Waking up 5am every dawn (it was not even morning) was for today’s school children unthinkable. When one lived 16 miles from school in early 70’s, that was the sacrifice for a promising future. It was not that there no school nearby, but going to a good school counts. Again the CHOICE we make for ourselves. I say we “just do it”. We must begin to ACCEPT. A lot have been said about learning to accept; have we actually STARTED ?

    Melayu, China, India, Serani, Peranakan are what we are. Accept it. Stop the stereotyping. I had difficulty understanding what bumiputra meant. It doesn’t mean UMNO like many has been mislead to thinking. Correct the perception. Accept one another like friends and relatives. Why dislike the Melayu; they lazy?; Melayu tak suka Melayu pun ada. Why ah? Melayu kolot ah? Melayu baru ah? Some years ago our chief opposition used to utter.
    When have you said it, you said it. Don’t be an ostrich. Sorry got carried away a little.

    Don’t be colonial. We must begin to accept ourselves; then it is easier to make our children accept. Then we will see 1Malaysia ka, Malaysian Malaysia ka, apa Malaysia also can have one.

    Sekolah bersama-sama selama 12 tahunlah yang akan memantapkan perpaduan rakyat Malaysia dulu, kini dan selamanya. Bila rakyat kita boleh berbicara satu bahasa, barulah semangat kekitaan meningkat. Lihat sahaja ketika acara sukan antarabangsa dalam dan luarnegara, negara lain boleh sahaja berpadu dan memberi lagu sorakan yang jitu kepada pasukan mereka. Malaysia dengan rakyatnya yang lebih kecil jumlahnya berpecah-belah pula sorakannya dengan bahasa caca-merba, sungguh malu dibuatnya!

    Selain itu, maklumbalas dan pemerhatian saya juga – perubahan majoriti bukan Melayu yang semakin bersikap mengelakkan sebarang budaya berkaitan Melayu kini semacam manifestasi hilang hormat dan kebencian terhadap kebobrokan pemerintahan “Melayu-Umno” yang pada mereka tidak berintegriti, tidakcekap, kuat rasuah dan serba-serbi lembab. Mereka tidak berasa kagum dengan pemerintahan birokratik Melayu-Umno dengan sikap pemalas dan tidak kompeten kebanyakan orang Melayu dibawahnya, ditambah lagi jiran di selatan begitu menonjol pencapaiannya di arena serantau dan dunia, menambah hilang hormatnya pada “pimpinan Melayu”.

    Dizaman maklumat lebih terbuka kebelakangan ini, semakin ramai Melayu sendiri yang lebih kritikal akan halatuju negara kita dibawa Umno. Saya sendiri rasa kecewa kerana Umno yang dulu pernah berjasa kini lebih menonjol akan DOSAnya meranap negara. Institusi-institusi yang diranapkan khususnya di zaman Mahathir satu persatu menonjolkan sifat-sifat seperti dinyatakan di atas. Maklumat juga masih terus cuba disembunyikan atau diperkecilkan, lihat sahaja Indeks Rasuah 2009.

    Untuk menangani kebobrokan sistem “Rojak” sekarang, langkah-langkah berkesan perlu diambil. Diantara yang boleh ditimbangkan adalah:-
    1. Perkenal sekolah satu aliran untuk semua secara tegas. Buat permulaan, murid Melayu wajib ambil bahasa elektif Cina/India agar lebih muhibbah dan kompeten. Kemudian boleh dikaji tambahan bahasa.
    2. Pemimpin negara wajib hantar anak ke sekolah satu aliran.
    3. Pemimpin wajib berbahasa kebangsaan dan bukan rojak ketika di majlis dan media. Pengecualian bagi delegasi perdagangan atau maksud khusus.

  27. I am one of the privileged few who have been through SRJK(c), VI, and MARA institutions.

    Throughout school, I was mostly preoccupied with academic, extra-curricular and sporting achievements. Otherwise, I do remember since Form One, I started to become very close to some Malay friends but they left for MARA schools after form 3 (due to the usual straight A’s in PMR). I therefore would like to admit that most of my closest friends right now are Chinese.

    What or rather who that was left at VI would be the Chinese and Indians, some loyal Malays. And in truth, at that time, most of the Malays that had stayed, were perceived by myself and most of us as being underachievers as they could not qualify for MARA places. This however, I have begun to realise, turns out not to be true as they turn out to be very fine young adults today. No matter how menacing they were those days (at least to me), I realised that they are just confused kids like I was, with the system, that was and IS still discriminatory, not just against the Chinese and Indians who were given limited opportunity for further progress as compared to the MARA Malays; but at the same time it gave those who couldn’t get into the heavily funded MARA institution a sense of failure.

    Then, after SPM I was privileged to have been offered a place at the finest MARA college to pursue my pre-University diploma. The students just had to be thankful for the free education and the highest amount of care and attention given to us. No one actually could or would question what was going on. When in all honesty, the Malays had no choice but to accept their privilege and to be grateful, even more so if you are a non-Malay (which makes up about 10% and I stress here non-Malay, not non-Bumi.)

    In a positive light, I believe that these institutions have achieved its purpose of bringing the level of literacy and achievements of the Malays on par with the rest of the nation since the Tun Abdul Razak era.

    On the opposite however, the rest of the nation have been forgotten and marginalised. These institutions have no choice but to fight and fend for themselves for survival as the inequality is perceived as a threat.

    Back to my innocent primary school days, we were instilled not to forget our roots, as the Chinese, but even more so, as Malaysians. We were and are still proud to be Malaysians.

    I guess my gut feeling is negative towards the abolishing of vernacular schools because I’ve been to one, and I’ve been through these different schools at different stages. But I couldn’t help but wonder, what was it that created the demand for vernacular schools in the first place? Opportunity came as the first answer. SK’s were rumored to be underachieving and lazy. So the parents send kids to SJK’s to instill a strong foundation for learning. Then send them out to the national schools for secondary education.

    On to basic principles of supply and demand as illustrated above, single stream schools are definitely recommended if they meet the demands of parents.

    I say if you want to abolish vernacular schools, be fair, do the same for SJK (c), (t), religious schools and open up MARA institutions (as they are not any different to national schools in the most fundamental sense in the first place , only the funding and student compositions).

    Or you can do whatever you want, this is democracy, supply and demand, people have have a right to choice, a right to the education of their choice. Meet OUR needs as Malaysians and our children will go to school as Malaysians.
