Persatuan Umno

Why Umno is seen as drifting further and further from the Malays?

How can the present crop of Umno leaders stop this gap from widening further?

It is annoying to hear Dato’s Sri Najib Tun Razak time and time again had to remind the Umno members to always be close to the people.

Yes we know that.

Umno leaders on the ground heard these calls from top leadership almost on weekly basis.

But do they understand the meaning of ‘getting close to the people’?

How to do this?

Umno, since the early 90’s was seen as a vehicle to gain shortcuts to riches. Not only the Malays, even the chinese and indians rode this vehicle in order to achieve wealth in a very non transparent manner – without much effort and struggle.

The young joined Umno because of the contracts they might be given. Using cables and whatever means they could find, their only objective in joining Umno is the commission they could get when they subcontract the project to their non malay friends.

Sometimes, they compare their success with their comrades with the amount of pink forms they could get from their patrons.

More often than not, any party activities no matter how mundane and simple will be laced with money making schemes.

If such ilk and ill-deserved methods were cultivated during the Pemuda stage, these same bunch of people will have the same culture when they become the top leaders of Umno.

When I was really young, I was a member of a Pemuda Umno. It was a very modest outfit. There were only 14 of us and all were between 18 to 23. The Ketua Pemuda cawangan had just graduated from the local university and awaiting calls to pursue his studies at overseas.

Our objective of existence? Just to have fun and perhaps contribute to the community.

One of the activities involved was inter party bowling competition, i.e., we organised a bowling competition between Umno Youth, MCA Youth, DAP Youth and PAS Youth.

The mothers, in other words, the Wanita Umno, Wanita MCA and Dewan Muslimah PAS prepared the food for the event.

We opened the competition to the kids in the neighbourhood as well. Thus, the ultimate aim is to bring the people closer together.

Although this aim was not realised by us at the time (we were of course, just wanted to have fun), the feelgood factor can be felt long after the event.

My point?

The Umno grassroots and its ordinary members must run the party like a ‘persatuan’.

Not like a money making vehicle which it has become today.

Do you remember how it was like in school when joining the scouts or the Interact Club? Did you even think about making money for yourself when you were in these clubs?

The only financial matter that you could have thought was – how to make money FOR the club. Not for yourself.

But these days, even after I am no longer an active member of Umno, the young ones had nothing much to say about contributing to the society other than talking about this contract, or that contract. They talked in the range of millions. Their idle chat while sipping coffee was only about scheming more money from their network of political bosses.

There is no more urgency or passion to talk about uplifting the Malays’ socio-economic situation in their conversation.

The reason I no longer play an active part in Umno is precisely because of that. Everyone is thinking about himself. I’d rather be in NGOs that directly tackle the socio-economic problems of the people.

There’s no longer genuine and selfless objective amongst the young Umno members. They don’t even believe in the core objectives of Umno. Their only interest is how to make money through their Umno membership.

Therefore, in order to appeal to the Malays, Umno must turn itself and operate like a persatuan.

Go back to your roots.

In addition to Datuk Sakmongkol’s “Umno and its low culture”, this approach is what Umno members must cultivate and endure.

Appealing oneself to the Malay heartland will only be successful if the members are fully involved in day to day party activities without the proclivity of wanting monetary returns.

60 years ago, the concept of contributing energy, time and sweat without any intention of gaining any monetary rewards was  a norm.

Now?

Most Umno boys will spit on their leaders’ face (figuratively speaking) if they ask the boys to do something without given them some money in return. Naturally, a persatuan does not run this way.

But the ‘Persatuan’ Umno back in the old days were driven by this very concept of selfless deeds.

‘Semangat tolong menolong’, ‘gotong royong’ and ‘bantu membantu’ were the core message of Umno in the Malay heartland.

This is the basic value that Umno must re-propagate among themselves. Show the people that you are sincere.

It would be a bad example to see a Ketua Cawangan so busy counting surplus money obtained from the Umno HQ which was meant for a gotong royong activity when in fact, any surplus money should be recycled for the next activity.

It is a tall order indeed in changing a mindset.

But treat Umno like a ‘persatuan’ and we shall see some changes from there. Anybody who are selfish will be turned-off by this approach. Only the worthy and the selfless will soldier on and take up the cause.

There is nothing more simple than that.

Yes, how is it like joining such clubs nowadays, especially in “Straight As reputation” schools? Does it still “feel vibrant”? My take is, no it does not. Probably clubs are seen to be robbing the “precious time” there is to study more and more, to attend tuitions, etc, because clubs are not “designed” for a student to score 20As, 30As.

Our school system also seems quite similar. While political parties nowadays seem to be designed for “quick rich scheme” (a tool for UMNO and friends, including friends in DAP too), our school are designed for “as many As as you can get”. No more “vibrant” clubs or extra-curriculum activities which are more for nation building than producing “straight As”. They even fight for vernacular schools which you know very well what damage these schools can do for unity & nation building by giving the excuses vernacular schools (chinese only, not Indians) produces straight As students more than any other types of schools. While political parties are designed for money, schools are designed for As. No different in that sense.

What a shame. We are heading down a drain.

Do we have such homely inter-family scene nowadays? No. We do have quarrels even within a family … usually about who’s to get more of this and more of that. And what is worse? The head of the family is seen to main kayu tiga … as seen to be more concern with the care of the children of a back-stabbing neighbor.

  3. Salam JMD,

Semua akan setuju tapi semua juga akan menolak. Too corrupted to the core !

Tapi ATAS kena buktikan dulu.

  4. JMD, the other thing is, most of us are so disgusted with the behaviors of these “orang umno” to the point that we don’t want to be associated or seen with them.

Najib could do better and more. The cheats, the crooks, the con-sultants, the son-in-law and the corrupts are still there. They are getting away with millions while pretending to be fighting for the Malays. Sorry to say this but I am wondering “is Najib afraid of something?”

Its gonna be hard for you to defend UMNO in the coming years but I know, you don’t have much choice. Its frustrating to be in our own Tanah Melayu and yet, we are trapped in a corner not knowing where to turn to.

What you wrote is exactly how I felt. I am sick to see my fellow race has descended into good for nothing rent seekers. I do not know how the present UMNO leaders wanted to change the culture that is deeply rooted in the organisation.
Deep inside there is still a glimmer of hope the present leaders will prove the real change that they have been calling all this while.

  7. UMNO is shying away his core supporters. In trying to please everyone, UMNO ended up with more grudges to the party, mostly of his own hardcore supporters. Sadly, UMNO is no longer seen as a humble and honest yet powerful and decisive political power in the lands of the Malay. Remember the story of the man, his son and their donkey. Trying to please everyone is not the answer. You’ll end up losing your credibility.

Hot tempered heads and low credible leaders are not helping either. Ditch them before the coming elections. You’ll end up losing their supporters, but gaining high moral ground is how battles are fought and won.

This is a game, a game that you’re in because you want to do something for the country. And unfortunately, to help the country you have to be part of this game. You can stop whenever you want, and you can leave. Nobody is asking you to play this game. You are in it by your own volition, your own choice.”

“What a shame. We are heading down a drain.”

For the first time in this blog, I feel like I am not alone.
NEP quarrel is also all about the spoils. Money and expensive overseas scholarships.

Our education system is all about statistics. Govenrment planning involves racial statistics.

We must have the wisdom to remove the shackles of race mongering. If we are truly believers of God, we are to stand up only for righteousness and justice.

Just as in the old days, when priests used god’s name and tax the followers until the religious authorities became powerful and rich, in this country, some uses race and religious issues to do the same thing.

    So sad!

JMD : It wasn’t me who said that. It was the commentator himself. Thank you.

  10. Dear JMD,

I totally agree with you on this subject. You seem to endorse what Tengku Razaleigh wrote in Malaysiakini a few weeks ago. Most politicians on both sides are more keen in making money for themselves–self interest as you said. This mindset must change. I noticed that this mindset started soon after Mahathir became the PM. Before that we had very honest and dedicated politicians–we didnt hear any form of monetary scandals. After Mahathir became the PM and onwards we have been hearing scandal after scandal–starting with the BMF scandal and now the Sime Darby and the sand scandal. These scandals must stop before he country goes bust as predicted by Idris Jala.
    Thank You

JMD : Yes, naturally with the exemplary leadership of Tun Mahathir, Malaysia went through vast changes of economic and social modernisation. Once, we were unknown. Back in the 70’s, people do not know where Malaysia is. But after several leaps and bounds, several economic successes and wealth of the nation increases, those who walk in the corridors of power began to feel greedy. Just like any developing countries, materialism and pursuit of wealth became the ultimate goal of the people; more so the politicians and the business tycoons.

Too bad you mentioned Tengku Razaleigh and BMF scandal within the same comment. Those two will forever be intertwine with each other.

  11. “…Why Umno is seen as drifting further and further from the Malays?…”, what I think is that the current administration do their math based on what happened on the last election, i.e. non-malay votes.

They are betting on getting non-malay votes by playing non-malay ‘tunes’. I think it is a bad bet because from what I can see is that the current generation of voters, they will not vote you after they take your goodies but they still want the goodies.

Worst is non-malay see the current political stage as their best chance of getting whatever they want because the current administration is in a bad position to negotiate after their big loss in the previous election. Even those internal so called “family” parties also ride on the band wagon to threaten the “big boys” for goodies.

While for malay votes, I still think that if their needs are being addressed, chances of getting their vote back is high. But it seems the current administration not care about this.

I guess these goodies based so called “transformations” will continue till the next election, unless there is unexpected changes happen in the “big boys” club.

Bung Mokhtar? berapa lama jadi wakil rakyat tapi yang buat dia most famous is the sexist remarks he made in Parliament and controversial marriage to an actress..!!

Would you vote for that man? Tu baru satu, belom lagi yang lain-lain yang bertindak macam tak berpijak di bumi nyata. No… i think UMNO is a lost cause… I will be looking out for individuals.. I’m sure others will too..

  13. UMNO has admitted that it is “corrupt to the core”. No less than a former Secretary General even wrote a book complaining about it. DS Najib has initiated moves to amend the party nomination/ election procedures to eliminate money politics and perhaps get the party back to being a persatuan. But it is not enough.

A lot depends on the top leadership. There’ll be no rooting out of corruption if the big guns are not prosecuted. There ought to be some indication that the very top wants the dirty big fishes be fried. No doubt, MACC motto may always be “Without Fear or Favour”. But there’s also such a thing as “Discretion is the better part of valour”.

The poor Government servants. By the very nature of their terms of service, they are subservient to the political masters. In the absence of clear instructions as to the prosecuting of senior politicians, they need some indications. Since the days of Dato Harun Idris, former UMNO Youth Head and Menteri Besar of Selangor, arrests and prosecutions of senior politicians appear to be those whose ascendancy may not be in the political interest of the big wigs holding power.

If this is the basis for big-time prosecution these days, no big guns will get prosecuted. It will appear as if no big guns are corrupt. It is farcical. It has to change. DS Najib has to do more on corruption. It’s the scourge of society. It’s demoralising. It’s destroying the moral fabric of our society.

I personally know of one Class F contractor in Penang who says that he does get contracts these days. With the previous government, he had no chance and most projects were not under open tender which means that favouritism was being practised.

Problem had always in the implementation of the NEP and not with the NEP

  17. UMNO today has lost its lustre due to the numerous mismanagement and corruption done at the highest level. After 36 donkey years, how many people had been prosecuted for the BMF Finance scandal? One young and bright lawyer died for nothing! UMNO, at the helm of BN chose to treat the rakyat as though all rakyat are stupid and UMNO knows everything. The reverse may be true, though not 100%. For as long as UMNO keep on avoiding the mayhem that resulted from their own greed, more rakyat over time will love to hate them.

The rakyat see incompetencies in UMNO, and the best BN can do is cover up with more lies. It is so hollow. They should act like a man and not like chicken. Face up to issues up front like a real man. Offenders must be punished regardless if they support the party more than they worship God. Only if transparency and justice is done, UMNO will become more unpopular with time.

Last year, Petronas gained a total pre-tax profit of RM86.8 billion and so far, it has earned about RM600 billion. As the surge of international oil prices, it’s profits will as well substantially grow. But the government has reduced fuel subsidies by a wide margin, turning Malaysia into one of the world’s most expensive oil price oil-producing countries. It makes the people wonder where the huge profit of Petronas has gone?

Former Work Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said in the Parliament last year that the government has compensated a total of RM38.5 billion to 20 highway companies. Also, as the government has stopped building the Scenic Bridge in Johor, it has to compensate RM300 million construction cost to the bridge contractor. Isn’t the spending of such huge amount a waste?

Former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that the Central Bank has lost RM30 billion in foreign exchange trading in the 1990s. Who was the manipulator behind it? (Second Finance Minister was in charge of Bank Negara’s Forex trading at that time)

Malaysia Airlines was said to have suffered losses every year. But why to spend RM1.55 million to buy three paintings to decorate its chairman’s office? And why to spend RM7,525 per day to recruit a foreign senior general manager?

Proton Holdings bought a 57.75% stake in MV Agusta for €70 million but sold it at €1 (RM4.50) a year later, causing Proton to lose €75.99 million (RM 348 million)?

    Other excesses and wastages:

    1. The Bank Bumiputra twin scandals in the early 1980s saw US$1 billion (RM3.2 billion in 2008 ringgit)

    2. The Maminco attempt to corner the world tin market in the 1980s is believed to have cost some US$500 million. (RM1.6 billion)

    3. Betting in foreign exchange futures cost Bank Negara Malaysia RM30 billion in the 1990s.

    4. Perwaja Steel resulted in losses of US$800 million (RM2.56 billion). Eric Chia, was charged with corruption for allegedly steering US$20 million (RM64 million) to a Hong Kong-based company

    5. Use of RM10 billion public funds in the Valuecap Sdn. Bhd. operation to shore up the stock market

    6. Banking scandal of RM700 million losses in Bank Islam

    7. The sale of M.V. Agusta by Proton for one Euro making a loss of €75.99 million (RM 348 million)

    8. Wang Ehsan from oil royalty on Terengganu RM7.4 billion from 2004 – 2007

    9. For the past 10 years since Philharmonic Orchestra was established, this orchestra has swallowed a total of RM500 million

    10. In Advisors Fees, Mahathir was paid RM180,000, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (women and social development affairs) RM404,726 and Abdul Hamid Othman (religious) RM549,675 per annum

    11. The government has spent a total of RM3.2 billion in teaching Maths and Science in English over the past five years. Out of the amount, the government paid a whopping RM2.21 billion for the purchase of information and computer technology (ICT) equipments which it is unable to give a breakdown.

    12. The commission paid for purchase of jets and submarines to two private companies Perimeker Sdn Bhd and IMT Defence Sdn Bhd amounted to RM910 million.

    13. RM300 million to compensate Gerbang Perdana for the RM1.1 billion “Crooked Scenic Half-Bridge”

    14. RM1.3 billion have been wasted building the white elephant Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities on cancellation of the Malaysia-Singapore scenic bridge

    15. RM 100 million on renovation of Parliament building and leaks

    16. National Astronaut Programme – RM 40 million

    17. National Service Training Programme – yearly an estimate of RM 500 million

    18. Eye on Malaysia – RM 30 million and another RM5.7 million of free ticket

    19. RM 4.63 billion, ’soft-loan’ to PKFZ

    20. RM 2.4 million on indelible ink

    21. Samy announced in September 2006 that the government paid compensation amounting to RM 38.5 billion to the highway companies. RM 380 million windfalls for 9 toll concessionaires earned solely from the toll hike in 2008 alone.

    22. RM32 million timber export kickbacks involving companies connected to Sarawak Chief Minister and his family.

    Bailouts –
    23. Two bailouts of Malaysia Airline System RM7.9 billion

    24. Putra transport system, which cost RM4.486 billion

    25. STAR-LRT bailout costing RM3.256 billion

    26. National Sewerage System costing RM192.54 million

    27. Seremban-Port Dickson Highway costing RM142 million

    28. Kuching Prison costing RM135 million

    29. Kajian Makanan dan Gunaan Orang Islam costing RM8.3 million.

    30. Le Tour de Langkawi costing RM 3.5 Million

    31. Wholesale distribution of tens of millions of shares in Bursa Malaysia under guise of NEP to cronies, children and relatives of BN leaders and Ministers worth billions of ringgits.

    32. APs scandal had been going on year-after-year going back for more than three decades, involving a total mind-boggling sum of tens of billions of ringgits

    33. Alienation of tens of thousands of hectares of commercial lands and forestry concessions to children and relatives of BN leaders and Ministers worth tens of billions of ringgits

    34. Travel around Malaysia and see for yourself how many white elephants like majestic arches, roads paved with fanciful bricks, designer lamp posts, clock towers, Municipal Council buildings that looks more like Istanas, extravagant places of worship, refurbishment of residences of VIPs, abandoned or under-utilised government sports complexes and buildings, etc! Combined they could easily amount to the hundreds of billions of ringgits!

    35. Wastages and forward trading of Petronas oil in the 1990s based on the low price of oil then. Since the accounts of Petronas are for the eyes of Prime Minister only, we have absolutely no idea of the amount. Whatever amount, you bet it is COLLOSSAL!

In Time Asia magazine issue on March 15 2004, South East Asian economist at Morgan Stanley in Singapore Daniel Lian, figures “that the country may have lost as much as U$$100 billion (RM320 billion) since the early 1980s to corruption.” Mind you, this is only corruption and it does not include wastages!

All the rakyat’s hard earned money down the drain and they have the audacity to raise fuel prices and asking the people to change their lifestyles.

    • Rakyat susah, I totlly agree with your sir,

I totally a All these hugh “losses” of the nation’s reserves arises because the leaders of the nation allows them to happen by not willing to implement the necessary check and balances to control the rakyat’s monies before releasing funds to such opportunists. The government is where the buck should stop at because they have the power to control such devious activities but instead chose to ignore or even participate in it through inactions or through active participations by them or their subordinates. When funds are chaneled to GLCs recklessly and without proper investigations, then, the government should be held fully accountable for losses as a result of such malacious neglect or their duties.

These are the results of NEP and Ketuanan Melayu hijacked by interested parties who stand to benefit from such absence of control over funds allocation (or rather giftings). Helping the poor and needy is one thing but throwing the rakyat’s monies to cronies/opportunists must be investigated and stopped dead on its track before the nation slides down the slippery slop of bankruptcy. Is this how the government administers the nations finances? Is this how NEP is unfolding? Is this how the nation is slipping into oblivion? Is this how the rakyats have to suffer poverty?

These sort of things happens because we now have a weak judiciary which is unable to withstand the onslaught of the executive elites because they are basically placed there in their positions by these elites/politicians, so, do not expect them to bite the hands that are feeding them. Guess who we have to thank for in all these rotten to the core GLCs? Who do we need to thank for our lack of judiciary independence? Who do we have to thank for all these corruptions and abuses of power that we are seeing in all these scandals that are now surfacing – just because these losses are now too hugh to be able to cover up anymore? Who do we have to thank for when the Malay community is no longer competitive anymore in whatever they do to the extent that they have to depend on charities and handouts? Who do we have to thank for?…I guess we all know who!….Don’t we? gree with you sir,

JMD : Am glad you think it is okay to have the NEP and Ketuanan Melayu. The bad part is, these two are being hijacked by unscrupulous people (the interested parties). I agree with this statement. Thank you.

Bila dah sedap kutip TOL, konsesi dah habis pun, masih dipanjangkan masa mengutip TOL, memang tak masuk akal
