NST’s misreporting

What is wrong with the News Straits Times (NST)? It seems old habits die hard. NST, who was guilty of spinning news under Pak Lah’s leadership  apparently is still trying to spin its news.

Now, newspapers are supposed to report news. Not spin them or paraphrasing what a particular news source is saying. How hard could that be? If you want to put forth your own opinion, then that should be printed in the editor’s column.

If you start to edit or spin the news, then you will lose credibility when people learned that the news were inaccurate. How many times have we seen Kalimullah spinning the news since 2005?

In this latest case, it is unfortunate that the NST had taken the stand to paraphrase the gist of the speech given by Raja Perlis last week.

From the latest explanation by the Raja’s aide, NST had made a disastrous mistake by printing something which was totally untrue. How could a journalist made a huge error in reporting a critical news item that way?

And why didn’t the news editor recheck that particular piece?

What were the editors – Lionel Morais and Lee Ah Chai doing? Sleeping on the job? Please, we have enough people sleeping on the job already.

And Hishamuddin Aun, the one who got the lucky break to be the Group Editor In Chief of NSTP must show more dedication in his role.

If NST wants to regain its ground as a credible mainstream newspaper, it should revert back to the original spirit of the NST. Printing out and spinning wildly news items, then have to apologise for its dumb mistake is not the mark of a premier newspaper.

A different news report about the same news item revealed how the journalist and the editor had misconstrued the whole speech;

Note the stark contrast between the two reports. In other words, Raja Perlis is saying – respect the Constitution. Everything is inside there as reference. The agreement made 51 years ago are infused within its pages.

The underlined passage means that the effort to address those who question and nitpicking on the issues of Ketuanan Melayu, Malay Special Rights, freedom of religion, and the monarchy’s position, must be approached without any emotions, with facts and with some openmindedness based on reality.

That is all. Too bad certain blogs had taken the NST news report and made their own mistakened conclusion about it. Why? Because NST had made an irresponsible reporting. NST has the responsibility to report on the news. Not spin them out of control. We had seen enough for the past 5 years where every news about the government were skewed on the positive side when instead, everyone knew that something is certainly wrong with the country. That is why the blogosphere gained prominence.

Hishamuddin Aun should learn from this mistake.

  1. Dearest JMD,

They had to do it sbb that is the way to cari mkn. Nanti kalu tak buat tak dapat habuan.. Less their cucu cicit punya harta.. So must spin spin spin..

Truth is out there. Either we want to believe it or not. You can never rely from the Media dah nowdays.

Anyhow, JMD, bole tak lighten things up in your blog.. like what you did last wkn or what you had for dinner last nite or better still tell us abt yourself .. i dah bosan dgn apa yg dok jadi skng nih.. things doesnt look any brighter.. especially the economy.. asik UMNO/PKR/DAP/PAS.. sudah sudah laa gado.. full stop!! use your brain (if they have any) and think how you can achieve a healthier economy..

hmmm… bole baran jadi nyer.. yg bagi i truly happy at the moment is that Liverpool kalahkan Real Madrid 4-0.

JMD : Thank you for the comment. I am an ordinary citizen of this country by the way. Nothing to shout about. I am probably the person sitting in the next table beside you during lunch yesterday 🙂 or maybe my real name is actually Johari Mohd Darwis (JMD) haha. And yes, Liverpool did really well yesterday. I hope this weekend will be a terrific day for them too. That will make me really happy.

SAD does not even begin to explain how I feel.

  4. I don’t think you should attack NSTP. It has been consistent as a blindly loyal government mouthpiece, except for this unexpected blip. Perhaps the writers are new, and have not been indoctrinated by UMNOs values and virtues.

UMNO needs to do a better job in brainwashing citizens senseless, especially the malay reading NST crowd.

What do you think are the steps that can be taken by media to further ensure that UMNOs dirty linen are not washed in public? It is causing much humiliation that corruption is being talked about publicly, and we need to ensure that our leaders are protected from such talk.

NST please do your bit, submit yourselves to UMNO and Barisan Nasional.

JMD : What are you blabbering about Senkoh? If you want the NST to continue its spin, please go somewhere else. This article is to remind NST that they should at least be accurate in printing out news. Unless you are propagating that NST should spin everything to the detriment of the government, then we all now know the amount of sincerity you have in wanting to see a better mainstream media. Which is zero. It is good that at least you are relying on the new media for information and participating actively in the discussions. At least you will have some exposure on both sides of the political divide. By the way, nice try on the reverse psychology / sarcastic jibes. I truly enjoyed it. I suspect you’d love to see NST spin more rubbish like they did don’t you? Have a good day Senkoh and thank you for visiting this blog. Really appreciate it.

  5. Dear JMD,

It was deliberate, no amount of stupidity can come out with that kind of interpretation unless done with sinister intention. Are they still at it? The spinning exercise. I thought with PakLah outgoing soon NST goon would’ve start packing by now. Who actually behind this spin? Or the goon at NST are left unattended since the boss is going to retire soon. Its akin to the era of USSR breakaway states, the breakaway KGB’s spies started to enjoy the new found freedom of espionage without any monitoring.

  6. Bro JMD,

What do you think of Pak Lah and Anwar meeting at Ustaz, Sheikh Mahmud Al-Mazjub’s Madrasah Nurul Iman. Something fishy for sure. It cant be coincidental , the SB would have known about this, unless PakLah sneaked out.

Somehow it strengthen my believe and suspicion that Paklah is doing something to stop Najib from taking over the PM post. Also reinforce my suspicion that the huru hara state of this country was a premeditated act to allow Anwar and company to gain entry into power.

JMD : To me, it is a petty issue. But it was sensationalised by some opportunistic people. However, I was amused when Pak Lah’s aide said the PM was tricked to come a day earlier. If that was true then the word ‘tricked’ should not be used here. It shows how gullible the PM’s position is (note, I did not say Pak Lah). The post of PM is an honourable post. The people in the PM team must be on their feet all the time. The usage of the word ‘tricked’ had belittled the intelligence of the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

  7. Dear Jebat.

Interesting isn’t it… Bloggers, especially those who are anti-establishment, are quick to latch on news that favaours their belief, irrespective of the fact whether the news is factually right. When a correction is published, they are strangely silent…

Anyway, going back to this particular case, I am rather surprised. I believe the News Desk of NST would have online access to Bernama etc, and I think they do have televisions in the news room. So, it makes me wonder why such a glaring error could have been committed. Perhaps they did not renew the Bernama subscription (which is very strange) or Finance forgot to pay the Editorial Dept’s Astro bill (trust me, this had happened in an English newspaper news room once).

Either the OC of News Desk for the day was asleep (which may explain what happened) or the OC took a stand and decided to go with the reporter’s story. In this case, the OC should have been slapped with a show cause letter. There is just no excuse for such a slipshod decision making process in the NST’s newsroom and the reprimand should go up the chain of command, not down.

It also makes me wonder that during the morning prayers of the News Desk and the final evening prayers did not take into account of the impact of such reports (for the benefit of those not familiar with News Desk operations, these prayers are not the religious sort, it has everything to do with what the editors perceive to be news worthy the next day. The morning prayers is to report what is expected and the evening ones report what has is available and suitable for Pg 1, apart from deciding the lead stories for other pages).

To say it is misreporting, I think the reporter would not have been capable of such writing. I would put my bet on the editor, who had seen the raw copy of the reporter’s then told the reporter to fax over the speech text and most probably rewrote it. Unfortunately, when the editor (or whoever) rewrote the story, he did not make use of tools available to him, such as the Bernama online services. He could have easily fetched a copy and compared it. Again, this process did not occur.

Finally, the final steps, when the decision of the news desk on what goes to Pg 1 is conveyed to the higher-ups… assuming if the GE is still around, otherwise it would done by phone. What I can remember is that there would be a lot of questions asked about such story and why was the story written as such. The onus of explaining this would be the OC of the day on why he decided that the story should stand. In this case, I guess the OC was pretty convincing that he sold the story.

Furthermore, a conscientious GE, in the event of doubt, would ask for a Bernama copy and compare it. If he is still unsatisfied, the GE would call up his counterparts in other newspapers to check (no, they don’t swap stories. This is the final mechanism used to ensure that what gets published the next day is factually correct though it may be written differently).

In this case, I will not blame the reporter. He wrote what he has written based on what he perceived to be news worthy. I would pin the blame on the first line of the defence – the copy editor; and the second line of defence – the sub-editors – for not kicking up a fuss.

Ultimately, the entire blame should go to the Group Editor, who would have been informed . This is standard SOP for any News Desk in Malaysia. Any news of significant interest must be reported to the Dato’ GE or GeiC or Ketua Pengarang Kumpulan, so that they would be in the know and can veto the story if need be, But this did not happen…

Anyway Jebat, do you seriously think the reporter could have written the way it was reported? I’d read it and I get this funny feeling it was a copy editor who rewrote the story.

JMD : Perhaps not then 🙂 Thank you for the comment and explaining to us the inner workings of the news room. Ever wonder why NST which is being labeled / accused as Umno paper, would print a lie about a Raja chastising Umno?

  9. Hi JMD,

Not too sure what to comment here except that with this kind of quality they will surely remain as a local newspaper with zero demand from overseas.

Anyway not sure where to place this. Read an interesting topic, “Kos tambang udara Khir Toyo lebih RM300,000”. The topic and the costs is not the issue. (Link here).

    http://www.bharian.com.my/Current_News/BH/Thursday/Mutakhir/20090312124406/Article/

What is interesting is that our ADUNs actually took the trouble to ask such unimportant questions in limited DUN sittings and the MB actually used up the resources to find out exactly what the cost (and more) involves.

Instead of coming up with bigger suggestions on managing the economy in light of the bleak outlook or the fact that his constituency still face issues such as lack of burial ground, traffic issues, poor road maintenance, dangerous locations of school etc. Instead Azmin so it is EXTREMELY important to use valuable DUN time to cast negative aspersions against the former MB.

Show you are made of better stuff for God’s sake and not also stoop to such gutter politics that is only fit for kedai kopi etc. Simple answer could be from Khalid, since this issue not of grave importance we can provide you the details later and so forth.

There are so many issues relating to the ordinary folk. even such as hill slope construction (which also near or within his constituency) instead this issue of how many times Khir Toyo went since 2001 is a whole lot more important.

I am embarassed at the quality of People’s Representatives that we are producing from both sides of the fence. These are the people where we entrust with making decisions that affect our daily lives?

And on this jokers from NST, these are the people the government trust to communicate and disseminate information?

    Good evening JMD

Spinning is an understatement. The right word should be misinfomation designed to create anger to the raja of perlis and hence create division and havoc. The art of misinformation has been well developed by agencies such as the cia, mossad etc. The republic of singapore being the protege of usa, I am sure has also developed this art to a high level. I am pretty sure that they have establish and develop backroom boys who carried out these tasks of misinformation to whomsoever they see fit.

Or maybe it is true that the raja of perlis does not want the ketuanan melayu since he is not from malay blood… See what I mean?

  12. Dear Jebat.

A lie? I think not. The best thing to do is to see who was in charge of the News Desk on that particular day. It is very difficult to any assumptions without knowing who is charge. By knowing who was in charge, then the answer shall be revealed. It is also difficult to explain things in the News Room the way it is without being accused of being a racist.

These news people are human being too. They have feelings, sentiments and their own belief, just as I did. When I was in the news business, there was one particular politician I have never liked then and I disliked him even more now. Unfortunately, this particular politician’s gift of the gab had endeared him to the people.

So, does that make me biased? I’m afraid so but then, during my days, news was reported as it was, responsibly and with the salient facts presented. In the end, the people will decide what they want to believe. This was taught to me by arwah Pak Samad.

Thus, if you really want to think about it, one must not forget that at News Desk-level, these editors would have access not to just blogs but also bloggers. Therefore, perhaps they are just sick and tired of doing what they are required to do, i.e. presenting facts as they are, but instead chose to craft a story that would fit the agenda of the day. Forgive me for saying this, to me, what ails the current government is that it is not because the people (read voters) hate them, the government has not given the people any reason to like them (the government)… mea culpa.

The best way to describe News Desk of now is that they are armchair editors who dare not assume responsibility. Furthermore, I am willing to be that given the current circumstance with the story in context, I believe the reporter would have been reprimanded instead of the editor. I think this would explain the decline of journalism in Malaysia.

Again, these editors, often with their coterie of groupie reporters, would talk to no end about how stories should be and being human, I don’t think I would be too far off the mark if I am to say that the editor would take it upon himself to (re)write a story for the sake of popularity. You know and I know, the editors also have friends among bloggers and they (the editors) too are influenced. Gone were the days of strong-willed editors, now everything is about being popular… reminds of you of that politician doesn’t it?

Going back to the NST being accused/labeled as an Umno newspaper, this would be my take. I have often believe that newspapers anywhere in the world are not totally free in the true sense. In Malaysia, they are beholden to the government due to this thing called the Printing Press Act. In the west, it is the shareholders, advertisers and to a certain extent, the government. In short, even in the largest democracy in the world. i.e. India, the newspaper would be beholden to what its owners want and who the owner is friendly too.

Ergo, if Pakatan Rakyat were to be the government-of-the-day, the newspaper slant towards everything would be adjusted accordingly. I think Media Prima’s shares held by parties linked to Umno would either be divested, diluted or worse.

Similarly, the theoretical ruling government would impose their will on their newspapers and changes would be made to the editorial line-up. How will they do this? Again, the Printing Press Act. From what I have seen the way PR has been running the four states, I envisioned them to be more draconian towards the mainstream media and somehow, the ISA will be used more… I just hope I’m wrong but I subscribe to this belief – The more things change, the more it will stay the same.

JMD : Thank you IPFM for this comment.

We your followers would really love to read not only more writings from you but also abreast with current events. You explained that you are busy with some commitments.

The brains to lead UMNO after 28-3-09 have been put in place.Led by NTR, UMNO must re brand itself, with structural changes in its values, vision and mission, etc.

There are structural changes that happened during Pak Lahs’ premiership are entrenched now. For example, now the rakyats are daring enough to ridicule the Palace in the name of freedom of speech. If executive actions are taken, they are a bit late in time, and damage has already been done.

KJ is a big liability to NTR. Can he not include KJ in his Cabinet line up without the back lash from UMNO Youth, the 304 voters of KJ ? NTR must now think how to please the rakyats, not UMNO members any more. The rakyats will determine whether UMNO and BN will remain in power in GE 13.

To NTR, please have the moral courage to do what it is thought to be in the best interest of the rakyas. If KJ must be dropped, so be it.
