Taking stock of the situation in Perak

Next Friday (6th March 2009) marks Datuk Dr. Zambry’s one month tenure as the Menteri Besar Perak.

People may not notice this but his ascension to power actually began with the defection of an Umno assemblyman from Bota into PKR on the 25th January 2009. Ironic is it not? Anwar Ibrahim’s political move caused Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli to resign from his post as Perak Umno Liaison chairman a few days later. All matters of the economy were forgotten by the then Perak administration because they were busy trying to get partyhoppers from BN. Consequently, Perak BN was in the brink of panic.

However, barely 2 weeks after Bota jumped into PKR, Datuk Dr. Zambry became the next Menteri Besar.  YB Datuk Seri  Mohd Nizar became the fall guy from Anwar’s political maneuver. Not much surprising when someone who is supposed to take charge of the state felt compelled to play along with Anwar’s irresponsible theatrics.

Datuk Dr. Zambry as the new Menteri Besar, must not make the  mistake of his predecessor. The state’s well being is his utmost responsibility. This is where he should put his intelligence and his PHD qualification to the test.

Now, what have we seen since February 6th 2009?

First off, his demeanor as the new Menteri Besar of Perak.

It is a delicate position. All eyes are on him. On the eve of his swearing in as the Menteri Besar of Perak, he gave out TV interviews in RTM1 as if he is the legitimate Menteri Besar of Perak already.

It was distasteful. This is what I would labeled as ‘seperti kaduk naik junjung’. Almost all his answers to the host in that tv program showed how and in what way he will perform as a Menteri Besar. Hello. You have not even been sworn in yet by the Sultan. What kind of arrogance is this? Again, ‘lebih sudu dari kuah‘.

RTM, being overzealous to kow tow without knowing the implications of such buffoonery, manage to disgust people. Well, that interview at least for me, left me disgusted.

It seems that bad interviews and overstepping boundaries of proper demeanor is well ingrained in Umno. Pakatan Rakyat is even more worse. But this article this time is not about them. We shall concentrate on the weaknesses of BN for the time being.

Another example of bad interview was the one given by Bukit Gantang’s Umno deputy divisional chief – Kamarulail Hj Sulaiman.  I am not sure whether he was misquoted by Malaysiakini, but that interview had illustrated how pompous this lecturer from Kolej Islam Perak is.

He had actually threatened the leadership of BN by saying:

He actually used a nonsensical excuse that he needs to be an MP in order to help the division. In fact, he admits that the division will not get much out of him due to his ‘low’ position in Umno. Gone were the days when a grassroot leader are sincere in their contribution. Demi Agama, Bangsa dan Negara? What is that?

He is not even an MP yet but already have the audacity to think that he will become one if he is nominated to be the candidate for this coming by election. Like Zambry, ‘lebih sudu dari kuah’.

Not only that, he leveraged on the assumption that near 19,000 Umno members in Bukit Gantang supported him.  There are 55,000 voters in Bukit Gantang. To win comfortably, he needs more than 20,000 votes.

I sure hope he has done some groundwork to capture enough votes there because I fear, this type of people will be the first to boycott the BN and Umno election machinery if he was not elected as a candidate. I hope this will not be the case. As we all know, power makes everyone crazy. But  a person can become even crazier if they lost power which they never had in the first place.

Although Kamarulail made backhanded remarks in his second interview that he will leave it to the leadership to choose the candidate for Bukit Gantang, it is hoped that he will give 100% support to whoever is chosen in that by-election. Nothing less than that. Demi Agama, Bangsa dan Negara. Right?

BN Bukit Gantang should have by now gone to the ground to do surveys / interviews just to understand the feeling of the voters. To the ground means, meeting everyone. Not just the BN supporters. Like we discussed in the previous article, groundwork like these can better gauge what the people in Bukit Gantang want. Their choice of candidates, their aspirations, the current sentiments etc. From thereon, BN can improve on their election campaign.

I stated that –

if we cannot understand on what we did wrong, then how can we learn from this particular lesson? Read the quote below:

In life there are no mistakes, only lessons, but if we do not learn from the lessons then it is a mistake – Anonymous

I was pulling my hair in frustration when Datuk Dr. Zambry and Datuk Seri Najib had initially focused a lot on appeasing the fears of non malays in Perak the moment BN took over the state. The non malays were perceived to have been worried that the new BN government will not be fair to them. This fear is being planted by the Pakatan Rakyat leaders just to instigate the people in Perak. BN and mostly Umno, should be wise enough not to fall into this racial politics of Pakatan Rakyat. They will always harp on this racist tactic because this is the only way they know how.

Datuk Seri Najib, of all people should have known better. And Datuk Dr Zambry, with his doctorate in Political Science should have been quick to grasp the opposition’s modus operandi of gutter politics.

The fact is, BN had always been fair to all races but the affirmation by Datuk Seri Najib and Zambry that BN will be fair to them had only solidified the perception that BN is indeed unfair! Zambry promised to allocate money to Indian temples and Chinese schools the very first day as MB! This is certainly not dignified. Gone were the days when promising money and development will win you votes. Furthermore, it only shows how deperate you are to show people that you are not unfair! Are you desperate? Why?

It is unfortunate that both of them fell for the political ploy of Pakatan Rakyat. The opposition will always try  to create doubts in the minds of the people. I wonder why BN had to be defensive after winning a whole state. They are in a winning zone but they started to become defensive all of a sudden.

Let me rephrase that. Barisan Nasional had won an entire state but they immediately acted as if they are on the losing side! Again, why did you become desperate?

What Zambry need to say was:

“BN had always been fair to all races and the questions about our integrity in upholding good and fair governance do not arise. In fact, we will try our best to be better than previous state governments. We received a lot of complaints and feedbacks during the tenure of the previous state government and we intend to overcome any weaknesses for the sake of the people.”

Barisan Nasional need to subtly reposition themselves as the better option for the people in Perak instead of being apologetic about their own agenda. Indeed, the BN agenda had always been fair to all.

Just like a commentator once said, PEOPLE HAVE BRAINS. Do not underestimate the people’s ability to think for themselves.

Being defensive all the time, asking people to listen to Sultan’s decision, getting counsel from England etc are all signatures of a WEAK government. Are you that weak in Perak? When you project yourself as a weakling, who do you think the thinking people will vote next?

Even today, Zambry could have finished off V. Sivakumar’s effort to call for emergency house sitting this 3rd March by stating the relevant laws. What he just said was

‘Sedangkan jika kita baca beberapa perkara dalam Peraturan-Peraturan Tetap DUN Perak, ia jelas menunjukkan bahawa sebarang persidangan DUN yang hendak diadakan hendaklah mendapatkan perkenan Tuanku,” katanya

But what is that ‘beberapa perkara’? Where? V. Sivakumar stated Standing Order 27(3) as his defense. What is BN’s defense? All this talk about getting the consent from Sultan for the emergency sitting is just political talk. Where is the fact? Talking without facts and being vague about it will make you look like a political player. Not a leader.

V. Sivakumar is banking on BN’s stupidity to fall for this trap. Obviously, Sivakumar had interpreted the laws to suit his motive. Being a stickler for facts myself, I had half expected Zambry to provide me with the relevant laws to strengthen his statement.

Where is the bloody state legal adviser? Did Zambry forgot to ask him what is the relevant law that applies to this situation? In Melaka, it is within the state laws that any house sitting, must have the consent from the Governor. I am not sure about Perak. People should stop throwing the ball into the monarchy’s court!

The Monarchy had made their decision based on the Constitution for the politicians to deliberate further and now every small state management matters must be decided by the Sultans? Grow some spine and manage your own state of affairs. For instance, it is redundant to ask the Sultan whether an ADUN who is caught sleeping with someone else’s husband is still viable to represent the people or not. How ridiculous can that be?

So, what is the next move for Barisan Nasional?

First and foremost, the politicians must remember not to act like ‘kaduk naik junjung’ and ‘lebih sudu dari kuah’. We see so many examples of how Pakatan Rakyat leaders acted that way and how their luck turned for the worse because of their own arrogance and lack of humility. Learn from it.

Secondly, but with no less importance, Zambry needs to develop a mission statement for his government soon. This mission statement must show that they are better than the previous topsy turvy Pakatan Rakyat government.

It can be the mother policy for BN’s governing style. The proposed mission statement can be along the lines of;

1) To govern in fairer manner without isolating or discriminating any groups of people that may cause undue tension among the people of Perak.

2) To practice more dignified leadership and embrace the spirit of good governance and above all, to maintain an honest approach towards serving the people (note: no more throwing money everywhere just to gain support for we believe that mutual respect comes from cultivating more sense of humility and earnest in our services).

3) To focus on the wellbeing of the people in the state and manage a proactive government that will strive for excellence in all areas of the economy in order for the state to regain its proper course as stipulated in Wawasan 2020.

4) To reinstate peace and order among the people so that the quality of life will rise and be able to live without fear and without anxiety once again.

5) To correct the imbalances in state finances and resume the agenda of tolerance and true power sharing concept in state governance.

It is our promise to the people of Perak that we will always be humble and persevere in facing the great challenges ahead. The silver state had faced enough difficult times. It is time we reforge a new understanding and teamwork to successfully blaze through the uncharted territory ahead.

The mission statement above is not perfect or exhaustive. It will also become just rhetorics and a laughing matter if each point within that mission statement is not backed by concerted effort to realise their goals. Get experts to help in the areas of economy. Prepare KPIs for the relevant state government’s agency and the excos. Above all, Zambry must prepare a set KPIs for himself and announce it to the people in Perak. This will show how serious he is in managing the state.

BN needs to be a strong cohesive front in order to manage the state out of the current political and economical crises.

  3. i was thinking why was it that the current Perak government seems to be in a limbo? Then it struck me, Najib never thought that he actually managed to pull this one off. I guess he was sitting and having a coffee and suddenly people call him and said “hey! we got perak” and “tersembur” kopi najib itu. he he.
You should put in the part where Abdullah asked Zambri to make a police report against siva. I was thinking zambri should keep quiet, but he actually follow through the line and said “we will make a police report as abdullah suggested”.
    tsk tsk tsk.
Patut le BN kalah kat perak. I pity “taipingmali” and “perak bangkit” for their tenacious effort to help BN in perak through their blog.

JMD : Thank you for the comment. I believe everyone is entitled to support whoever they want to. Taipingmali and Perak Bangkit do give out logical arguments to justify their articles.

well spoken sir. It seems that nowadays even the BN politician thinks that BN is the mother of racial politics. How distasteful.

Demi Agama, Bangsa dan Negara. Seems like most of Malaysians forgot this slogan. Demi Kuasa, Wang dan Projek is more likely nowadays.

JMD : Thank you for the comment. Actually, to get the people believe that BN is racist is the opposition’s point of attack. They will be torn asunder if the people could see that it was just a propaganda tool to project themselves as a more attractive option. We can see that it is working well. Because, playing the racial card is a very powerful tool albeit very irresponsible. We could see that however crappy their state administration is, and however absurd their behaviours, the BN is still being treated as a pariah just because it is accused as being racist.

  5. “BN had always been fair to all races and the questions about our integrity in upholding good and fair governance do not arise”

You’re probably a Malay, and therefore you feel BN has been fair to all races. What you probably don’t know is that many Chinese,Indians even Bumiputeras do not feel this way.

That being said, let’s hope this situation is handled in a far calmer, more subdued way that what it potentially could become. As politicians clamor for power, it’s the people who will suffer their wrath.

JMD : What is BN? It is a multiracial coalition of political parties where each community is represented in the government. Thus, everyone shall be heard in this country. Your point of view is only one of the many perspectives within the Malaysian socio economic context. I stand by my argument that BN HAD ALWAYS been fair to everyone. It is their agenda. Through the many policies created to develop Malaysia since Independence, man have reaped the seeds that had been sowed all this while. Businesses flourished, education is easily accessed, government is driven to reduce poverty rate. Now, which part of the BN structure is not fair? Everyone got a little bit of something from the government. The opposition is saying that the government is unfair because the Malays got the right to get bigger quota in government scholarships. They accuse government of racism because of this. They accuse of racism just because the public servants are mostly Malays. They also accuse and incite the public that just because bumiputra received discounts to buy houses, they are racist bigots. But they forgot that when the non Malays have a huge chunk of the nation’s wealth as compared to the Malays or other bumiputras, it is not racism. Businesses owned by the non Malays grew big because the government’s policy of pro business. This pro-business approach is within the same affirmative action policy that we call the NEP. I wrote a lot about this in here. Please read the commentary section as well.

As I dicovered, you wrote a bit about racism in 2003. Your article entitled “Todays hot topic racism” is more or less the same with what I see racism in general. It is not the government’s (BN’s) intention to discriminate. It is more of a necessity (hence, NEP was born). It is the reaction of people that made the policy sounds evil. It is also due the mismanagement of the policy that made it stink.
Now, you had a different outlook then as compared to today. What happened? This is what happened when people believe the propaganda being spread by the racist opposition who had used the racial card just to win support. Hopefully, you can re-differentiate between what is good and what is bad.

Your third paragraph is precisely why I urged the current state government of Perak to focus on the economy. That mission statement may possibly serve as guidelines to improve the people’s fate there. I am quite appalled with the amount of criticisms being thrown by the fanatic PR supporters whenever an article on how to improve the BN and the people were written. They do not seem to care about the people in general. They seemed to focus more on their pride and bigotry.

    Thank you.

  8. ‘I wonder why BN had to be defensive after winning a whole state. They are in a winning zone but they started to become defensive all of a sudden.’

The only way to win anything in a parliamentary democracy is via elections. Pretending to be naive only goes to show you know UMNO robbed the people of Perak. Who else can UMNO turn to but to a corrupt Sultan. The Zambry clowns went to England alright and they must have been shocked when told of how illegal the power grab was in Perak. So the only thing they can do is to run to the Sultan. UMNO is using the Sultan to circumvent all reasonable and legal discourse over their power grab in Perak because they know what they did is illegal. By the way what f”’king BN are you referring to in the UMNO power grab.

Hiding behind a corrupt Sultan and a prostitute BN will not save UMNO from the trouncing in the coming polls. Stop your bullshit and learn to lose like man rather than pondans.

JMD : Thank you for the comment. In parliamentary democracy, elections is not the only way to determine who is the MB or the PM. Before I move on, I would like to state here that Dr Zambry did not send anyone to the Queen’s counsel. Based on the news report, he clarified that nobody was sent to England. The news about the QE trip was quoted from an unknown source.
Therefore, your arguments from henceforth are irrelevant and at best, merely hearsays.

Back to the parliamentary democracy; the change of Menteri Besar is constitutionally available. Malaysian constitutional law follows British constitutional law (in that the king or queen appoints the prime minister). And not just the UK, but the major or mature Commonwealth countries — Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India — follow British constitutionalism.

Thus, the Agong or the Sultan for each state has very similar powers of Queen Elizabeth II.
So, the precedent would be what the Queen of England, and the previous monarchs, had done in the past. Those are constitutional conventions, and they will guide us.

In this case, the role of our own King and the state Sultan’s is similar to the role of the British monarch.
And applying that, the monarch’s decision in England to appoint so-and-so as the prime minister — Mr X as opposed to Mr Y — has never been challenged in the courts. These decisions are called non-justiciable — you cannot take this matter to court as it is done in His Majesty’s official capacity. They can challenge it, but I suspect, the courts will drop the case.

It’s a principle of law. And that’s because the monarch’s power to appoint the menteri besar or the prime minister is known as a royal prerogative. It’s like the question of mercy, pardon and giving honours — all these are examples of royal prerogative.

In 1956, Anthony Eden resigned as prime minister in Britain. Queen Elizabeth II had a choice of either Harold MacMillan or Rab Butler as the next prime minister. She chose MacMillan. So those who supported Butler would say that’s the wrong decision. But did they take it to court? No. They accepted it because that’s the royal prerogative. No general elections were called to elect the Prime Minister.

Then, in 1963, when MacMillan himself resigned, again QEII had a choice between Butler and other people. She chose Lord Sir Alec Douglas Home. Again, no general elections were held even though Sir Alec is from different party altogether.
In Australia, the Governor General represents the Queen. He has vice-regal powers. Sir John Kerr in 1975 sacked the Labour PM Gough Withlam and appointed the opposition leader, Malcolm Fraser as PM. The entire Labour Party was very angry but they did not challenge this in court.

So, where did you find the definition that in Parliamentary democracy, elections are the only way to determine who leads the government? Our Constitution (state and federal) stipulated that the head of state (King or Sultan) will choose the MB and PM based on who he thinks command the majority of the house. Do not be naive mate.

The important thing is that it is the King’s (or Sultan’s) satisfaction that matters. The king / sultan must be satisfied that the PM / MB of the day no longer enjoys the confidence of the majority of the lower house. So what that means actually is that the king cannot act arbitrarily; there must be some objective facts, some proof, some reason for him to act.

Was Sultan Azlan fully satisfied about the MB’s position after meeting all the BN ADUNs plus 3 Bebas that day? I am do not know as I was not there. But from his decision, I would hazard a guess that he was indeed satisfied. After that, was history.

    Thank you.

  18. You’re quite right JMD that Zambry did not read the situation well enough and as a result was a bit over-confident at the early stage. The political situation in appears to be messy. BN leaders don’t seem to read the ground well enough and they should have adopted a proper psychological warfare approach. I believe most Perakians especially those in rural areas are confused and to the Malays they realised that the Pakatan Govt had merely given them the lip service.
The non-Malays on the othere hand have been expecting more and with this sudden change may start thinking whether they should stay with Pakatan or move back to BN.
Zambry must start thinking seriously how to flood the outlying and rural areas with dedicated cadres to win over those fence sitters and imbue their confidence that the BN Govt can still deliver to gratify their needs.
At the same time those new leaders (as the old ones should make way) among the younger generation should emulate that dedication, diligence and sacrifice of those leaders during the early years of the struggle for independence, No more going around with expensive cigars in hand in flashy cars and bodyguards running around. Otherwise forget it and should begin to brace ourselves with continuous poitical confusion that may develop.

Eden and McMillan resigned. Do you think Malaysians are stupid enough not to see that the Sultan asked for Nizar’s resignation because the Sultan could not legally fire Nizar.
As for Kerr he is probably Austarlia’s most hated Governor General. Yes, many know about how he became the most hated Governor General. The same fate awaits Sultan Pangkor II. After appointing Zambry as MB the Sultan has not uttered a word in his defense. What a F”kinh brave Sultan.
I thought the homosexual charges was as low as the Malays could go. The Sultan Pangkor II has proven me wrong. Have you ever wondered why the state of UMNO’s birth have said almost nothing to defend the Perak power grab. I know some of the UMNO Malays there and I have yet to meet one who is proud of the power grab. The bastion of UMNO does not wish to add to the revulsion of the rakyat over the power grab.

Ever heard of MALU or have you forgotten what it means.

JMD : Sultan does not have to fire Nizar. He lost his seat the moment he lost the support from his Aduns. I think I already gave examples regarding your contention that elections are the only way in parliamentary democracy to choose a leader. Please use better words regarding the Sultan. People will respect you for that. Act like a man, not like a toddler throwing tantrums here and there. Accept the ruling like a man too instead of rolling your body on the road and pelting stones to the monarchy. Criticisms is a two way street mate. MALU la sikit.

By the way, this blog never agreed on this party hopping incident. But since Anwar Ibrahim started this nonsense (Karpal Singh duly lambasted him for that), I guess all is fair in politics.

What is unfair is the amount of horrendous criticisms the monarchy received for doing its job.

What we need to concentrate now is the fate of the people in Perak. The state government must strive to be better in its role for the sake of its people. Hence, the purpose of this article. The only ones who do not care about the people are the ones who continue to politicise everything without even trying to contribute anything.

What is your contribution besides being a grumbling taxpayer?

judging by your writing, you appear to be a Malay, an UMNO supporter regardless of their heineous act, you are still trap in malay supremacy, blindly support BN and do not listen to people from the ground, defending the rulers with the same spirit as the UMNO youth (which is not sincere at all).

let me ask you a few questions and i will know whether you are racist or not. Do you think Malays or non-malays should rule this country (as in PM)? Do you think Malays are more intelligent than non-malays? Do you think UMNO really protects and love the people?

Are you a member of UMNO?

Pls answer the questions and post it, kay.

JMD : Wow what a mouthful in the first paragraph! I do not listen to the people in the ground? I am the ground! I support Umno regardless of their act? Haha. Have you not read all my articles? That was the reason why this blog started. Have you not read all my articles from the get go? Don’t be lazy. And how do you know I am not sincere? By posing me questions above? I have nothing to hide mate. I do have a few questions on for you too. If you care to answer them. No pressure.

    1) Non Malays as PM – I stand by the Constitution. Anyone can be the PM provided he / she gets enough support from the Dewan Rakyat.

Do you think a non Malay should rule this country?

    2) Are Malays more intelligent than non Malays? – Wow, your racist condescending mind are working overtime here by posing me this question. What gave you the idea to ask me this question? Anyway, the answer is no, I do not think the Malays as a whole are more intelligent than the non Malays. And the non Malays cannot claim that they, as a whole are more intelligent than the Malays.

Why? Do you think the Malays are more stupid than the rest of the people here in this country? Are their brains smaller? Tell us more if you think that is the case.

    3) Umno in general protects and love the people. I know many average Umno members who toiled all their lives to bring comfort to their fellow kampung folks. If not because of these certain Umno people doing thankless job, then who else can we depend? You?

As I replied to a comment above, all the institutions that was set up after independence, had helped to alleviate the Malays’ plights after being oppressed by the colonials for hundreds of years.

    4) I was a member of kelab Umno overseas back in early 90’s. The last time I check, currently my name is not in Umno’s register. But I am interested with Umno’s activities nevertheless.

    5) Do you respect the Constitution like how the DAP and PKR had attested in their statements? Do you know what respecting the Constitution means?

    6) Do you think the non Malays are more intelligent and less corrupt than the Malays?

    7) Don’t you think Islam as the official religion in this country ought to have a special status as stated in the Constitution?

8 ) Don’t you think the feelings of the majority people in Malaysia have the greater weightage as compared to the minorities?

    9) Don’t you think the minority too should adhere to the laws set by the Constitution?

    10) In a democracy, don’t you feel that the minority must work along with the majority so that the nation will progress and remain peaceful? Do you not think that if the minority tries to impose their set of laws to the majority, it will only bring about anarchy?

Update: Do you think my criticisms and calls for Umno Perak to look after the people and be serious in managing the state are not feasible?

Anyway, my stand is as bright as day should one would care to read all my artcles. No need to pose me any question just to satisfy your patronising attitude mate. Please do not let yourself entrapped in this chauvinistic and racist mindset. Thank you.

    • Jebat’s fren,

What heinous act ? UMNO may not be perfect, that I have to admit, but they have done quite well in taking the lead in the BN Coaliation.

We, as a nation, have prospered under an UMNO led coalition. We could at any time in our history taken the path of Indonesia, Thailand or the Philippines.

BN managed the situation well during the Emergency days, fought off the Indonesians during “Konfrontasi”, handled the delicate situation after May 13th, defeated the Communists, came out nicely after the ’86 recession, heroically battled IMF, managed to restore power back to the people after the Constitutional Crisis, didnt over react during the Ambalat crisis.

Because of the large scale public spending in infrastructure, most Malaysian construction companies successfully bid for big construction jobs in China, India and the Middle East. We have a relatively better infrastructure than any South East Asian country.

But of course all is not perfect, there are some areas where I wish BN would do things differently. But by and large, if you objectively assess BN’s performance, you’d come the conclusion that they’ve done quite well.

I know there are those who question the bail outs, but look at the situation in other countries, those countries that criticise bail outs are spending massive amount of monies to do the thing they criticised us not so logn ago.

AIG is being bailed out by the US Government to the tune of RM100 billion, the French did the same thing to Societe Generale and the Brits did it for Northern Rock.

I know some will say that the bail outs benefit the business people, but imagine if BBMB were not bailed out, imagine the depositors that would lose their entire life saving due to the greed of a few business people. It benefits the Opposition if bail outs were not carried out.

People will go to the street and revolt ! It benefits the Opposition to have chaos and a Government that loses the trust of the people. It will massively boost their chance to get in power despite the fact that no one believes that they are capable in the first place.

They ride not on their capability to deliver, but on the supposed failure of others. A bit like vultures. Can’t hunt, just scrape off bits and pieces of wounded or dead animals.

If you take into account the Opposition’s stand on economic issues, and had they been successful in stopping bail outs, if they had been successful in opposing Proton, Penang Bridge, KLCC, KLIA and a host of other “mega projects”, if they have been successful in bringing in IMF, we’d have a sorry state of affairs in Malaysia.

They have been betting in the wrong direction for the past several decades, why trust them ?

Now Pakatan is trying to drag Najib’s name through the mud by linking him to Altantuya over and over again. The facts dont support the case for Najib’s involvement, yet it would appear that Pakatan’s supporters blindly believe that such link exist.

And what makes you think that being an UMNO member makes one a racist ? Just because DAP doesn’t claim to be a party based on race, that doesnt mean they are not racist.

The whole thing about DAP talking about justice and equality is merely a camouflage. The first thing they did when they seized power in Penang was to had dismantle the quota system. At face value, it looks as if it was intended to allow fair play. But look at the whole economic set up, how is fair play going to happen ?

I once invested in a construction company with 2 chinese friends, I was never allowed to negotiate because I was told that had I done so, the Company would have to pay a price 10-20% higher on account of me being a Malay. I was told by my partners that the Chinese believe that since I as a Malay got things the easy was, for jobs and projects, I am quietly penalised and is expected to pay a premium !

The reality is DAP feels MCA is not doing enough to protect the Chinese economic cake and cultural hegemony.

It talks about justice and equality, but it is merely a power grab and a quiet economic hijacking in the process.

Just like why the US attacked Afghanistan and Iraq under the pretext of freedom when all it ever wanted was to quench the American thirst for cheap oil and for big oil companies to make a killing. I can imagine some redneck shouting, guns blazing and screaming … it’s about the money ya’All..

Anwar had every chance to promote social justice and whatever crap he claims to champion now, when he was in the Government. He never did, he was focused on getting to the top. He didnt care who he stepped on, he pushed a few people off the cliff, he was (is) driven much like KJ. Which explains KJ running to meet Anwar after his release from prison to hand over Anwar’s passoprt to enable Awtar, sorry, Anwar to get “treatment” in Germany. As the character played by Tom Hanks in Da Vincci Code said, we are who we protect. KJ protecting Anwar, Anwar never publicly slagging KJ, makes one go….hmmm.

And if I am to be labelled a racist just because I believe that the Malays still need affirmative action, I’d wear that badge proudly.

As JMD once wisely said, albeit in a nicer way, those Malays who benefitted from the NEP and now calling it all sorts of hurtfult names and for it to be abolished is like, dia dah selamat menitit jambatan dan bila turn orang lain nak cross the bridge, dia suruh bakar jambatan dan suruh berenang di air sungai yang deras. Dasar Melayu jahanam.

Jebat’s fren, lets not allow your hatred to cloud your decision. As a mighty Jedi warrior once said, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering and suffering leads to the Dark Side.

Stay away from the Sith Lord (Anwar), he whispers nice things in your ears. Things you want to hear. John Milton wrote an engaging story that made you feel sorry for the Devil and what Milton wanted to teach is that Evil is seductive. It promises you the world but it delivers you into hell.

JMD : Thank you Lekiu. A remarkable read indeed.

  25. Dear JMD,

The situation is Perak is embarassing for the people of Perak. I am quite sure that Perakians are furious to be placed in this situation. I am not sure if they will be able to forgive or forget for putting Perak in this situation.

Who is actually to blame here? Let’s not look for people to blame here but instead look at the finest example here, when the voice of reason is thrown out of the window, turmoil will happen.

Both sides must now show what is most important to them. What is most important is the people of Perak. Their economy and wellbeing. Are both showing that? I have not seen any such example. Instead both are arrogantly showing that both of them have a right. Such arrogance that they have actually and truly forgotten what they are really there for.

It is time to wave the white flag and call a truce and sit down and negotiate what is the best action in the best interest of the people of Perak. Stop listening to people that does not have Perak’s interest in their hearts and minds. Speak as fellow Perakians without displaying and resorting to the differences in ideology, policy and so forth.

Stop the rot before breakdown in governance turns to breakdown in the society and lawlessness reigns the day.

    The rot stops here.

  26. It would appear that it is ok for Pakatan to hatch a plan to hijack the State, it is ok if they go around the world setting datelines for take over of the Federal Government.

They set the stage for a political play with the ultimate aim of toppling BN led Government after the GE, they set the rules of play, defection acceptable and they went all the way to Taiwan to get them to defect.

They failed on both counts, and when the tables are turned against them, lo and behold they cry foul play !

Everyone that fail to see their point of view is deemed corrupt and trying to hinder democracy. Any dissenting voice cannot be tolerated.

And yet, after all the drama they fail to see the irony of their shouts of democracy and justice.

My boss once told me, getting into politics is like going into a boxing ring, you have to take as good as you give.

    Vinnan,

By the way, calling Sultan Azlan Shah as Sultan Pangkor 11 doesn’t make any logical sense. Your reading of history is somewhat twisted.

    Khanjadime,

Very uncool, trying to play the race game and claim, wrongly I might add, that “melayu tipu melayu”, “tak menguntongkan melayu langsong”.

I agree with JMD’s reply to your statement above. Any Malay that says otherwise must have been missing from Malaysia since the 70s.

JMD : Thank you Lekiu for the comment. Sometimes we wonder what is it that they are after. It would be easier if they would have just said – “begone with the monarchy and Barisan Nasional. Pakatan Rakyat led by Anwar Ibrahim should be the only leader now. Please give the premiership to him on a silver platter. Or else, we will create more havoc in this country till everything is destroyed.”

  27. To my observation, the general public political mindset has changed from smart to fanatic.

There was once when politician are being ‘used’ by the public to indirectly help them govern and perform check and balance in the administration of the country.

If the politicians don’t perform, the public will vote them down, if they do, they will get subsequent support.

Now is different, there are people, a lot of them, just don’t care what certain politicians do, they just fanatically support them. For what I see, it is more than supporting, it is like ‘sembayang’.

When people changed to the fanatic mindset, what can you expect from the country ahead?

After last year General Election, I read a lot of articles and news proclaiming something like: people have woke up, people are more mature, … etc. I personally think these are just rhetoric and misleading, I honestly think it is actually in the opposite. How can a fanatic mind be mature?

Chinese has a saying: wealth not able to pass through the third generation. I personally think this is like a curse which is very hard to overcome. The history of civilizations have shown a lot of truth in this.

  28. (JMD : Friend, my answers in italic)

    Dear JMD

    1. Do you think a non Malay should rule this country?
answer: No. i have no preference over whether a malay or non-malay to be the PM. If a non-malay gets the support from the Dewan rakyat, the question is that will you be supportive or not?

JMD : You are trying to ask more redundant questions. Why lah? Just read the articles in this blog mate. The writer is not important here. What is important is what been written. If majority rakyat selects a non Malay to become the PM, then why should it be a problem for me? Do you have a problem everytime the majority selects a Malay as a PM ke? Wait, no need to answer that. If not this thread will be longwinded.

    2. Why? Do you think the Malays are more stupid than the rest of the people here in this country? Are their brains smaller? Tell us more if you think that is the case.
Answer: Human is equal. so stop harping on malays must regain back their positions and to rule. why not advocate your readers especually the malays to think like a malaysian and do things that benefits everyone regardless of race.

JMD : Are you delusional? When did I ever say Malays must regain back their positions and rule? I thought all this while I said Umno and BN must rule fairly and stop their corrupt ways. HAVE YOU READ MY WHOLE BLOG YET?

    3. Umno in general protects and love the people. I know many average Umno members who toiled all their lives to bring comfort to their fellow kampung folks. If not because of these certain Umno people doing thankless job, then who else can we depend? You?
Answer: are you saying that non-UMNO have not done anything for the country and for the malays? i have given my part to the society without any political affiliation. when tsunami hits penang, mostly the malay areas, i gave. are you blind? so many non-malays have helped the malays.
UMNO is all about helping its own race, and deep inside most UMNO members, do they care to help the non-malays. have you helped non-malays? can we depend on you to help the non-malays?

JMD : Now you a misdirecting mate. Your answer just show that Umno too played their role in the tsunami incident. What makes you think their contribution is less important than yours? That is just statement, not a question. If you say Umno is all about helping its own race (Malays only), then why would it be part of Barisan Nasional. It should have kicked out other parties and rule Malaysia on its own back then. Learn history please. Your statements are all accusatory. Based on your earlier question, you insinuate that Umno never protect or love the Malays. How far from the truth is that?
    4. Do you respect the Constitution like how the DAP and PKR had attested in their statements? Do you know what respecting the Constitution means?
Answer: I don’t know fully. do you know? have UMNO respected the Constitution? in full or in part? how about UMNO calling the Agong “binatang”. i have never called any Sultan/Agong binatang. neither DAP nor PKR. And you want to talk about respecting the constitution?

JMD : If you do not know, then learn from it. The faction in Umno that called the Agong ‘binatang’ will relinquish power this April. I recall Sultan Perak’s website was bombarded by vile insiduous remarks from Pakatan Rakyat supporters. If you only imply that you yourself never been rude to the monarchy, then I also had never called the Agong ‘natang’.

    5. Do you think the non Malays are more intelligent and less corrupt than the Malays?
Answer: Non-malays and Malays are equally intelligent. they have brains given by God. non-malays and malays are equally corrupted. but do you think UMNO has a whole is more corrupted than any party? be honest about it…..
talk about corruption, have you dealt with govt agencies? have you have first hand dealing with govt agencies from Putrajaya that ask you for money?

JMD : Here we have a reader wrongly mixed up government officers as Umno members. Hello, do you think all government servants are Umno members? You gotta be kidding me. Trying to justify your grouses using this example? Be realistic please.

    6. Don’t you think Islam as the official religion in this country ought to have a special status as stated in the Constitution?
Answer: Yes, since it’s stated in Constitution. so, did the Constitution explicitly tell the muslims to curb the christians to using the word “Allah”? What kind of special status do you really want? to persecute non-muslim and use demeaning words to label us as kafir? is that what you want? is islam is all about making condescending remarks on non-muslim? Can you list down what’s your wish list of “special status”? let’s be frank about it…..

JMD : Yes its is stated in the laws and Constitution that non Muslims cannot use the word Allah. Have a go and learn from the Constitution. Eventually you will learn to respect it. Follow the lead of your Pakatan Rakyat leaders who made statements to respect the laws and Constitution

    7. Don’t you think the feelings of the majority people in Malaysia have the greater weightage as compared to the minorities?
Answer: look at your racist remark. if you segregate us by race, then you have this mindset about majorities or minorities. why can’t you think about united all as one and let’s make referendum on certain issues. you talk about majorities’ feelings, feeling is feeling, it does not matter whether you are majority or minority. let’s talk about majorities in the right context. Perakians, in majority wants to dissolve the state assemby and to have re-election. can you tell UMNO to do so? if umno is confident in winning the majority, dissolve it and have fresh election. the majorities’ feelings are to kick UMNO out. do you respect that?

JMD : Racist minds will always think like this. When I said the majority, I did not mean the Malays. I said the majority – the ones who voted in Barisan Nasional in the last general election. Have you forgotten that? Which majority in Perak wanted to dissolve the state assembly? Listen here, the dissolution of state assembly is not in the hands of the people. It is in the hand of the Monarch. This is what we call separation of powers. Too much power in the hand of people will lead to anarchy. Can your racist mind compute this?

    8. Don’t you think the minority too should adhere to the laws set by the Constitution?
Answer: it doesn’t majority or minority, all malaysians should adhere to constitution. racist to the core still talking about race majority and minority.

JMD : Refer to my answer above. All Malaysians should adhere to the Constitution. Period. Again, I am not talking about race. Why are you so racist? Got up from the wrong side of the bed did you? Hello, are all Pakatan Rakyat supporters racist like you? Minority here means you guys lah! The Pakatan Rakyat supporters. Adhering to the Constitution yet?

    9. In a democracy, don’t you feel that the minority must work along with the majority so that the nation will progress and remain peaceful? Do you not think that if the minority tries to impose their set of laws to the majority, it will only bring about anarchy?
Answer: bro, majority in what? race again? go and tell your UMNO to respect the majority voters that supported PR govt in Perak and Selangor. you talk about anarchy, UMNO is worst then anarchy. UMNO does not allow ppl to do things democratically. UMNO is turning this country into a police state. Are you telling me to follow UMNO because UMNO has majority of the police behind them?

JMD : Again, you are playing the race card when I was taking about the voice of the majority. The ones who voted this government. Gosh, I can’t believe I have come face to face (figure of speech) with a hardcore, anti Malay, anti government racist. You mean, there cannot be other differing point of views than your own? Now read back this particular question and answer quietly in your heart. I am sure we will find a more rational answer.

Update: Do you think my criticisms and calls for Umno Perak to look after the people and be serious in managing the state are not feasible?

Answer: i am not against you calling UMNO to look after Perakians. but are they doing or not? you are a stubborn donkey.

JMD : Haha. How would I know whether they are doing that or not. I am praying that they will. For the sake of the livelihood of the people in Perak. Why am I being labeled as stubborn? I am not in charge of Perak. Do not make an ass out of yourself mate.

Anyway, my stand is as bright as day should one would care to read all my artcles. No need to pose me any question just to satisfy your patronising attitude mate. Please do not let yourself entrapped in this chauvinistic and racist mindset. Thank you.

Answer: by the way you look at the matters and issues, pls post this in other blogs to ask others who is racists. your or I? if you think that UMNO is not racist to the core, then who is?

JMD : It is you who are misguided in thinking that BN / Umno is racist when in fact, Umno and BN just need to get their ears pulled so that they will become a fairer, less corrupted and better government. But it actually not surprising because it is people like you who make racism more pronounced by inciting racial tension just like what you are doing now. Malay race this non malay race that… grumble grumble grumble
i really wonder who is trapped in this chauvinistic and racist mindset. i memang like to ask question ….

JMD : You are mate. You are.

Anyway, I think you should do more soul searching mate and look in the mirror ya. No more questions please. It is tiring to answer unimportant questions from irrational people.

  29. Jebat,

I don’t tend to agree with you on many things but I think you should offer yourself to UMNO. Maybe you did.

I have still some admirations for UMNO but mostly from the historical perspective, the fight for independence, the FELDA scheme, which was the best carried out policy ever, NEP until it got screwed somehow etc. The latter generations of UMNO leaders leave me cold, the present leadership lacks the ooomph of yesteryears. You’ve been blogging for awhile now on politics and probably have nailed the main reasons for the decline of UMNO. Wouldn’t it be judicious to spend more time to remedy the ills of a once admired party rather than highlighting the weaknesses of the oppositions. Many have done that and it’s not that hard.

I would welcome a chance to meet up with you. Maybe a teh tarik to discuss our differing political leanings. Despite what we see or what we hear, there’s still an air of civilisation out there. So here’s my small respect to you. Salute.

JMD : Thank you for the kind words Jonie. Have a good day ahead.

well, then see, let’s see the majority kick the UMNO ass in these coming 3 by-elections. let’s see the majority show to UMNO that UMNO is incapable of leading this country.

JMD: If majority rakyat selects a non Malay to become the PM, then why should it be a problem for me?

JMD, you are not answering question lah. simple question, just answer lah yes or no. don’t give me all this deflective style of answering.

JMD : Are you delusional? When did I ever say Malays must regain back their positions and rule? I thought all this while I said Umno and BN must rule fairly and stop their corrupt ways. HAVE YOU READ MY WHOLE BLOG YET?

JMD, think logically. if after so many years they are becoming from bad to worse, you think they can change? can your dog change into a cat?

JMD : Now you a misdirecting mate. Your answer just show that Umno too played their role in the tsunami incident. What makes you think their contribution is less important than yours? JMD, oh yeah. did the EC cheat? did the UMNO cheat? majority, under my dead bodies. can you thump your chest and say there is no abuse of power at all during the last GE? you will be minority soon. since as you mention, is nothing got to do with race, then you are the minority lah if you are living in Selangor. JMD, it is the UMNO that shout about all this and not all Malays. you get it or not, donkey. did i say the malays in PAS or PKR that is not fair to everyone? nope, i am pointing to the fact that it is UMNO.

it’s people like you make an ass out of yourself when i comment on UMNO, you deem me as anti-malay. can you separate UMNO and malays? (if you insist on malays = UMNO).

high and mighty JMD, the elite UMNO. the minority in Selangor. very scared of minority now …. they will send UMNO youth to disturb you if they lose. soar losers. oh, btw, the selangor UMNO youth are losers and minority too. pls remind them.

i am disgusted with BN as a whole, including Gerakan, MCA, MIC and the gutless sabah/sarawak parties. does that make me anti-malay, anti-chinese , anti-indians?

you like to assume and as defensive as UMNO. do you think BN led by the biggest group have managed this country fairly? maybe better for you to have a clearer mind and dissociate yourself from UMNO, that will help you to think rationally.

    from majority of selangor
    ——————————————

JMD : Hmmm… great to have you again here spewing filth all over the place. I will humour you this one last time by answering those killer questions. I pray I could answer them to the best of my ability.

We go back to the original question (refer to your first comment) – should a non Malay or Malay rule this country as PM. Read my answer. It should be clear enough. The Constitution provides that non Malays Malaysian can be PM. He can be a Baba, a Melanau, a Kadazan, a Ceylonese etc. If the majority (the MPs in Parliament) supports him to be the PM, then I will also support him lah. He is the PM. There, the answer is yes. Why so fussy?

Secondly, I some faith that Umno will change. Anyone can change. Anwar Ibrahim changed. Why are you pissed off with my writing? Are you angry because I wrote this article? It asks Umno to be better. It is criticising Umno. Criticise Umno pun kena marah. Dengki ka?

Thirdly, I was referring to the period in 1970 when Umno invited all parties to be in Barisan Nasional even though it was the strongest party at that time(please refer to the original comment and my reply). Hence, this is one of the proof that tells us that Umno did think about the people. You want more proof, please read Lekiu’s comment above. Learn history mate. If not you writing will make you seem really, really arrogant.

Your next question is interesting indeed. Whether I (me personally) have helped non Malays before. Since you have explained that you DID NOT insinuate that Umno NEVER helped the Malays, I must thank you first for that. Umno indeed have helped the Malays AND if I may add, the non Malays too. I am glad you have realised this. So, have I ever helped the non Malays before… have I contributed time / money to help any non Malays before. The answer is – Yes. Sure I have. It is actually one of my passion to help the needy and the poor. How now? Satisfied? Mate, who do you think I am? You think I am an Umno sycophant? Ask any readers here and they will tell you I criticised Umno a lot. Now, can you separate Umno from me?

Fourthly, you said this initially – “talk about corruption, have you dealt with govt agencies? have you have first hand dealing with govt agencies from Putrajaya that ask you for money?”
You claim that when dealing with government agencies (with government officers working in them), there are a lot of corruption in there. Yes, I did not go to tuition because in my time, tuition classes was unheard of. But I do understand English a bit. To me, your hatred to Umno is justified by your example about the government agencies above. Which is very unfair indeed.

The rest of your comments are absurd. Yes, BN is the minority in Selangor. BN (with 29 seats) became minority in Perak just because the Sultan asked the DAP, PKR and PAS to form Pakatan Rakyat back in March 2008. Nobody became disrespecful to the Sultan then.

But remember mate, at Federal level, PR is the minority. So, behave like one.

Thank you. Please read back the first paragraph of this reply.

    @ Jebat’s Fren,

Tuan-tuan dan puan-puan, Jebat’s Fren is your typical “Crybabies of Pakatan Rakyat”.

  32. dear jebats fren,
from the writing of yours it clearly shows that you are not interested in discussing issues, but rather provoke people into reacting to your statements…sudah lah tu…tak payah nak test power orang…imply macam2, insinuate macam2…discuss elok2 dengan posted issue sudahlahkan…. kalau orang lain yang tak setuju dengan jebat pun boleh discuss tanpa nak insinuate orang…why not you?

  33. Salam JMD,

I just wish to say that I think leematmutu is right in saying Jebat’s fren is the typical “Crybabies of PR”.

He appears to belong to the group that is never grateful, has its own version of Malaysian history, dislikes Malays and will criticise anything Malay. This fellow has a slighly better command of English than the others. But he is rude and insulting.

If he is a person who can see the light of day, your and Lekiu’s arguments have been sufficient to make him do that.

    Best wishes.

  35. The stress of being charged in court for alleged corruption involving money politics proved too much for Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria yesterday.

The 43-year-old Umno supreme council member and Federal Territory Umno Youth chief broke down in the courtroom after his case was heard at the Temerloh magistrate’s court.

The suave-looking Norza, who was dressed in a white shirt and pin-stripe black suit, was helped to a chair, where he was seen wiping his eyes with a handkerchief

    Who’s baby is crying now.

JMD : Notably, the absence of finger pointing makes Umno very much mature in handling this situation. Umno very much expects the law to take its due course. If any Umno leader is found guilty, it will not submit itself to what the opposition has been doing; blaming everyone else for their own mistakes. Kudos to Umno for taking this step in eradicating corruption. Thank you Laurent. Being a crybaby it seems is not BN’s forte.

  36. Take care of yourself and get the full support of the Malays first……that’s what UMNO should do! Even if BN still losses the next General Election, UMNO must win all Malays seats that it has contested. And..if the Malays still want to have a say in the running of their beloved nation…MAKE A CHOICE..!!! VOTE UMNO OR PAS..!! ..VOTE ENBLOCK LIKE THE OTHER RACES…( THEY THROW OUT GERAKAN, MCA, MIC..)
IT’S EITHER UMNO OR PAS…..and no sikit sini…sikit sana!!
You vote…sikit sini…sikit sana…and you’ll end up with the Perak fiasco..!! And, you might even have an MB whos party has no majority in the Dun, as a bonus! You have that….and you’ll have the 999 years too….
