Selamat Menyambut Tahun Baru 2009

Setelah melalui pelbagai dugaan dan ranjau sepanjang tahun 2008, kita merasa bersyukur kerana telah menghadapi semuanya dengan tabah dan penuh keinsafan.

Walaupun tahun 2008 akan berlalu tidak lama lagi, kita perlu merenung semula segala bentuk rintangan dan segala bentuk kejayaan yang kita sudah tempuhi.

Dengan itu, azam tahun baru akan menjadi lebih bermakna di mana kita semua akan lebih menghayati semangat untuk memperbaiki kelemahan diri sendiri, memperbetulkan mana yang silap dan bersemangat untuk mengecap lebih banyak kejayaan.

    People love to make new resolution at the start of each new year. It becomes a ritual to some of us. But actions speak louder than words. A resolution without action will make us the same person as who we are at the start of the year.

    So what is your new year resolution?

  5. ah, the festive season, new year and school holidays. Happy New Year incik Jebat JMD. wish you, Selamat Menyambut Maal Hijrah, Merry Xmas, and Happy New Year. May the year 1430h/2009m has good prospect for all of us. for sure, the march 2009 has a very interesting event indeed.

  9. Salam JMD,

    What is a year anyways? It’s simply the duration taken for the Earth to return back to the same location in space after orbiting the sun for one complete circle. And it’s gonna be 2009 too. Big deal. The earth has been going around the sun for way much longer than 2009 years.

    Some of us like to find excuses for something to celebrate. This ‘New Year’ event is one of them. We party, we drink our fill, we do lots of foolish things and for what? To celebrate the earth’s another complete rotation around the sun? Actually there’s nothing to celebrate. To reminisce on what we’ve done in the past and strive to correct our mistakes and be a better person isn’t a bad idea. However I don’t think we need a yearly-time reference for that, i.e., “to be a better person in 2009 than a person that I was in 2008”. How about being a better person tomorrow than we are today?

    They say 2009 is going to be a gloomy year – economically. Sad to say that one person’s well-being is measured by how much money one has. One can always say that money isn’t everything but then again, let’s not kid ourselves. Whether it’s ‘kais pagi makan pagi’ or ‘cukup makan’ or ‘7 keturunan pun tak habis’, we can’t deny it’s importance. However, all this economic gloom has nothing to do with the earth’s new orbiting. It will continue to orbit until Allah swt tells it to stop.

    The new year is not going to bring us any luck, charm, good feng-shui, whatever. We are the ones who have to work hard and of course with God’s grace to bring ourselves the kind of happiness that we want.

    I know I have been pessimistic. However, I still would like to wish everyone the best things they would like to wish upon themselves, including you, JMD – regardless of time and event.

    It’s been a wonderful 2008 sharing thoughts and concerns about our nation with you and your fellow visitors. Thank you for maintaining such a great place for us to convene!

  13. Salam Jebat. It has been a tumultuous 2008 with everybody busy politicking and nobody looks after the shop since March 2008.

    Anyway, just thought I pen a few words, in reflection of 2008 and what I wish could, or rather would, happen in 2009.

    1. That we all forgo racism. It is with interest I’ve read in many a forums, blogs etc, how Malay bashing is becoming the norm. In the eyes of other races, what the Malays have been doing in Malaysia had always been wrong. It makes me wonder how the Malays managed to jaw jaw their way to independence with the British.

    2. That we cut down a bit on entertainment. Have you noticed of late how much entertainment there is on television? Change to every other channel it is either somebody singing hoping to make it big, husbands and wives dancing away hoping to make it big, concerts here, carnivals there? I have often wondered how this anomaly had managed to escaped the minds of the intellect in Malaysia. We spend so much energy and resources making sure that we are entertained but we spend less time on trying to be spiritual. I have also read, with cynicism, of the government’s way forward through various strategies which would include having the people researching, innovating etc… Instead, what I see is more programs on television that centres on entertainment.

    3. That we realise who we are, where we come from and where we are heading. To me this is important. I am not the type who like to dwell on the past but I like to know circumstances that led us to where we are and how we plan to avoid mistakes of the past. This is missing in society and its leaders especially. Instead, we see leaders who often adopt populist approach to gain support from certain segments of society. Why? Your answer is as good as mine.

    4. Can we have some sanity prevailing in our local entertainment industry? Their latest proposal to jack up movie tickets for Hollywood-type films is pathetic. Produce good movies, people will see. Produce lousy movies, don’t expect much. Protectionism is not the way.

    5. Transparency please, at all levels of government, be they the ruling coalition or the self-styled Peoples’ Coalition. I may be mistaken but it appears that the Peoples Coalition-led governments have emulated their adversary whereas their adversary is becoming more like them.

    This is where I remembered what Pak Lah said recently, Barisan had won, why are the members behaving like they lost… Similarly, the Opposition-led governments still cannot shake off their Opposition-mentality – they won but behave like they lost – perhaps this is the similarity between the two coalitions. I’d especially like what Guan Eng said recently, that the Penang had managed to attract investments to the tune of a few billions. Does that include the golf course? Where is the quality in that? From a state that is the Silicon Island of Malaysia, it now wants to be known as a state for caddies and gardeners? And how come his Jeff Ooi is spending more time abroad then in the country (if I am led to believe by his blog).

    6. I also wish that everybody can see things the way they are, not the way they are meant to be seen.

    7. Stop this idolatry of Barrack Obama… Yes he had won, yes he had brought about changes in the mindset of the Americans. But isn’t he President-elect for the Americans, not the world and Malaysians in particular. I also wish that people would start comparing apple to apple, not durian to apple. It makes me wonder why people say Obama will bring about change, especially after reading about his administration line-up, which is still the same old thing.

    8. That the non-Muslims would leave Islam alone. This is the only country that I know of where a religious association can criticise a fatwa made, when they have failed to read the fatwa in its entirety… Reminds you of a certain bald fellow doesn’t it?

    And lastly, that we all exist harmoniously. This is the most difficult part and perhaps would be the most difficult to achieve. To you Jebat, I wish you a fortuitous 2009 and may all things good come your way.

  15. How delightful to know that my toddler in the future able to learn in a mixed races environment and in same time able to learn extra language without me forking out money to pay for the school lingua classes after school , IF only … Malaysians are able to see their differences as an asset .

    This idea of seperation does make me wonder .. is my kid skin pigment makes her undesirable or low in caste to sit with another ‘ superior race ‘ in her class ?

    I really pity my kid. I still have clear memories in my mind when my best friend Damien Lim sings better Isabella than most of us and me pranking as his teacher on the phone his grandma in Hakka to allow him to join a camping programme which turn out to be our fishing trip to Sedili for 3 days .

    Sad if my kid cannot enjoy what we had .
